Tick, tick, says the clock as it embarks on a deliberate journey towards its final destination. The day of reckoning slowly but gradually gets to its take-off. Finally, its journey ends, to unravel another chapter in the sphere of national events. The D-Day is here: 18th May 2016. Welcome to the first day of the Nigerian Labour Congress (N.L.C.) nationwide, indefinite strike. In case you haven’t heard, the aim of the strike is to get the Nigerian government to reverse itself on the recent increase in fuel price. It remains to be seen how effective the strike would be as well as how workers in different unions will comply with the directive of their parent body.

There are 5 pertinent lessons to be learnt from the current situation, which can be applied to daily living. Fasten your seat belts and let’s go!!!

1) Have An Opinion On Issues, And Be Clear About It: The N.L.C. position on the strike is clear enough. It is important to have your say on issues or situations in which you find yourself as an individual or a group. Your opinions should be guided by your personal values.

2) Be Known For Something, And Be Good At It: When we hear the Nigeria Labour Congress, we automatically remember it as a workers’ union, with the aim of speaking out for the Nigerian worker, engaging relevant agencies and authorities whenever policies or practices that do not favour the Nigerian worker are put in place. The reputaion of the N.L.C. is also derived from their past records and achievements.

Having a personal brand is also very important. When you are known for something, it determines to a large extent the kind of people that will come around you. What are you known for, as an individual? When you hear Steve Jobs, Apple comes to mind. At the mention of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, financial institutions and systems pop up in our heads. Call the name E.A. Adeboye, and you hear “Pastor”. Being known for something (or a few things) is important

3) Determine Your Core Values and Priorities: Having a life code of core values will help an individual or a group in so many ways. Having a set of value system you abide by will help you distinguish between what everybody wants you to do and what you need to do. Values help shape behaviour. Your value system helps you express who you are and what you stand for.

4)Choose Your Fights Wisely: Not every battle is for you. A few weeks ago, the N.L.C. threatened fire and brimstone over the purchase of brand new cars by the Nigerian Senate at probably inflated prices. Eventually, the labour union probably had a rethink on its intended action. Do not constantly engage in conflicts just to prove a point. Not every battle or conflict in life is for you. Your core values and priorities should serve as a guide to the conflicts to get involved with, either as an individual or as a group.

5)Understand That Certain Situations In Life Requires A Win-Win Strategy: Life can be simple if we are ready to implement some basic principles. In matters of conflict and negotiations, each party comes to the table with their expectations and demands. Wisdom demands that all parties involved be willing to shift ground a little or make some form of compromise during conflict discussions. However, in doing so, be sure not to sacrifice your core values or to utterly lose yourself just to please the other parties involved. Life is not just all about you.

In summary, conflict situations are good opportunities to discover ourselves as individuals, determine what we stand for, as well as make our priorities clear.

What do you think?
