Electricity bills are often ludicrously high thanks to our energy-intensive modern world, but every now and then, thanks to the forces of nature, a metaphorical miracle takes place. As reported by Quartz, Germany just experienced such a phenomenon when a particularly bright and sunny day supercharged their solar and wind power sectors.
Around 1 p.m. on May 8, the nation’s renewable energy generating facilities were supplying around 55 gigawatts of the 63 gigawatts being consumed – about 87 percent of the total electricity consumption. With the addition of the country’s conventional power plants, the output actually exceeded the national demand. This energy surplus meant that, for a brief time, energy prices were actually negative, meaning consumers were effectively being paid to consume electricity.
A similar feat occurred in Denmarklast year, when a terrifically windy day boosted their wind power sector so much that these turbines alone generated 140 percent of the nation’s electricity demand, with the excess energy being exported to Germany, Norway, and Sweden.
According to a United Nations report, Germany intends to be one of the frontrunners when it comes to renewable energy; it has pledged to be powered entirely by renewable energy sources by 2050, an ambitious feat to say the least. Days like May 8 serve to give this ambition genuine credibility.

Renewable energy producing energy so much that other wise nations are now paying citizens and literally begging them to use electricity.

In Nigeria the reverse is the case.

-We barely get 2hrs electricity daily

- The bills get hiked so much that it's barely payable even though we don't even see light to use

-when we complain, Our government literally tell us to 'Go fu_ck ourselves'

Germany is one of the best regulated country in the world. The germans are hard working people. They were destroyed twice at a most critical level (after the first and second world wars). But Through hard work, resilience, determination, instead of division complaints grimbling and pessimism, they emerged again as europe's first and greatest economy.

Germany as a country does not have much natural resources. After the first world war, they lost all their former colonized territory. They only had their brain and their self confidence to trace their way to prosperity. It is a lesson for Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.

If we stop grumbling and self pity, and dedicate ourselves to critical thinking and hardwork, in only 15 years, Nigeria can rise as a fully developped nation.

Greetings to you all.

That should not come as a surprise to anyone. While Nigeria is currently fighting for dear life at the hands of saboteurs, places like Germany have surplus in Energy generation. The solution is simple: Every hardworking Nigerian should as a matter of urgency go alternative in power generation. Solar Power as a very sustainable way to go. Solar Powered homes are common sight around the country now and this is the future. Once you power your home, any excess you generate can be sold for a fee to interested end users. This way, PHCN or NEPA will also go the way of NITEL. It may take some time but very soon, we'll get there and those who love blowing up gas pipelines would have been left behind.

Our industries should as a matter of urgency, seek collaborations with international agencies like International Development Funds who have assistance programmes for corporate bodies's quest to go green with grants. They don't need to cry out to government all the time. These grants ($1m -above) can help them generate their power using solar with ease and gradually expand their capacity.

wow... this is brilliant. we all need to take power into our hands! there's a renewable energy systems workshop in abuja sept 19-21 - https://www.nairaland.com/3333753/3-day-renewable-energy-workshop-abuja#49126216 we should all be part of it and learn how to generate pwer for ourselves and the society at large
