On the 10th of September the people of Edo state will be going to the various polling centre in their various locality to elect the person who will succeed the incumbent Governor Adams Oshomole whose tenure will come to an end on the 12th of November 2016. With this we bring to you the top contestants for the race to sit in the Dennis Osadebe government house Benin City come November.

1. PASTOR OSAGIE IZE-IYAMU


Osagie is a man who is believed to be popular and active politician after Oshiomole in Edo state today. He hails from Orhionmwon local Government Area, he was also a chief of staff and secretary to Edo state government during the lucky Igbenedions 8yrs administration. The Redeemed church pastor is already seen by many people as the PDP governorship candidate. He also has political structure within the 18 local government areas of the state.

2. Dr PIUS ODUBU


Pius Odubu is the current deputy Governor currently in a fend with the state Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomole. The friction between the two men is said to have started when Odubu went ahead to contest the election after the boss brought out Obaseki as his candidate. Many candidates like Ogie Osarodion backed down their ambitions for Obaseki but Odubu didn’t. many believe if the APC national leadership fails to resolve this disagreement it might cost them the election.
3. GODWIN OBASEKI


Godwin Obaseki, the rumored favoured candidate being supported by the incumbent Governor is gradually being seen as the next Governor of the state. Obaseki’s emergence in the Governorship race came as a surprise to many due to the fact that he is seen as a technocrat and not a politician. He is also alleged to be backed by African richest man Aliko Dangote who is also a good friend of the state governor.

4. General CHARLES ARHIAVWERE

Retired Army General and former governorship candidate of the PDP, he is believed to have dumped the party where he has lost all relevance, with the hope that he could still make it as the governor of the state under APC.

5. CHIEF SOLOMON EDEBIRI

Edebiri contested the 2012 governorship election on the platform of ANPP and came third. He led the ANPP group into merger with the ACN and CPC to form the APC. He later joined the PDP in 2014 after complaining of Marginilization by the ACN group whom he accused of running a one man show in the APC. Edebiri is generally seen as a light weight politician who many say is not equal to the task of tackling the ruling APC and had no political structures that can win him the ticket, but this may be the greatest undoing of those who underrate him in the contest.

6. Professor OSAHIEMEN OSUNBOR

Osunbor, a professor of law and former governor who was removed by the state elections petition tribunal when it restored the misplaced mandate to Oshomole, he was once described by governor Oshomole as a good man in the wrong party. Perhaps he might be going back to the Dennis Osadebe government house.

7. MATHEW IDOURIYEKEMWEN

Mathew Idouriyekemwen, a former majority leader, Edo state house of Assembly, was also Edo state commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. His ambition and acceptability cut across the three senatorial districts. He has the support of the youths and prominent party leaders like former minister of Works Architect Mike Onoleimemen.

8. SENATOR UZAMARE

Ehigie Uzamare, a two time senator, he dumped PDP for APC, where he rode to victory on the back of Oshomole. He was quoted that PDP ticket is as worthless as a Zimbabwen dollar then. But as a typical Nigerian politician he went back to PDP. His chances are very slim because he is said not to be trustworthy.

9. EARL OSARO ONAIWU

Osaro Onaiwu was the director general of the governor’s forum in Nigeria. He later became the DG of the PDP governors forum during a split in the forum. He has promised to bring to Edo state what he lend to other governors as the Director General of the Governors forum. Onaiwu is also backed by the PDP Governors forum.

10. KENNETH IMASUAGBON

Barrister Kenneth Imasuagbon, popularly known as “Rice man”, Imasuagbon who has demonstrated his love for and desire to bring succor to the needy in the state through his annual rice distribution and other forms of philanthropy. He has dumped the PDP where he has contested many times under it but was denied the ticket, Imasuagbon is believed to be in APC to try his luck again this time.

U know the most painful thing of all? All the APC contestants were all formally PDP members and they will still be shouting change. I respect Chief Tony Anenih till date because all these APC and PDP politicians in Edo are all his boys at one time or the other. Anenih made all these men including Oshiomole. If u know the history of Oshiomole case tribunal were he won his mandate u will forever respect this Old man. Political Bulldozer.

Forget about the fraud allegations against Anenih, From his power, influence and personally, I dont think there will ever be someone like him from Edo State.
