A state of emergency has been declared in the tomato sector in Kaduna state, northern Nigeria, local media report.

A moth called the Tomato Leaf Miner or Tuta Absoluta has ravaged 80% of tomato farms, Commissioner of Agriculture Daniel Manzo Maigar told the press.

He calculated a loss of at least 1bn naira ($5.1m; £3.5m).

The price of a basket of tomatoes has increased from $1.20 less than three months ago to more than $40 today.

Africa Live: BBC news updates

A tomato paste manufacturing business owned by Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, suspended production earlier in the month due to the lack of tomatoes, reports Forbes.

Mr Maigar was reported as saying officials from the ministry of agriculture have gone to Kenya to meet experts on the Tomato Leaf Miner

Why so much backwardness under this government?

When our corrupt lecturers and Professors in university of Agriculture are only concerned with intimidating students and receiving cash from students to pass examinations..

Are you guys saying no Degree/Masters/Doctorate Student has carried a project/Thesis/Dissertation on this moth called the Tomato Leaf Miner or Tuta Absoluta?

Imagine running to small Kenya for help.

I think this a National issue which should not be left to the Kaduna State Government alone. Where is Audu Ogbe and his team.

What is he saying on this, who is he partnering with?

Oh Adesina, we miss you so much. The best Agricultural minister we've had. Not the indolent and clueless Ogbe, a trademark of this administration

you are getting it wrong. GOVERNMENT and private sectors are not supporting the education sector. They work independently from the education sector. On consultation was made with the Nigerian universities. If it is true that they did send delegates to kenya, it is an eye service or avenue for looting.

BBC reported about the trip yesterday. Even if the universities were not consulted, shouldn't they have boldly told Nigerians they have the solutions to checkmate the menace? Last week here in Nairobi, l watched on TV some Professors discussing issues around vegetable farming and packaging and they made reference to what Nigeria is going through regarding tomatoes and how it could be controlled using tested methods.

Since am not in Nigeria, are there suggestions made to arrest the situation that was ignored?

the farms that was affected are farms owned by peasants. Peasants own 90% of farms in Nigeria. They work alone and hardly receive any agricultural extension services because the government has no support for those programs in Nigeria. The universities are just hearing the news like we are doing now. They had no knowledge of this prio to this total loss. It is still a government issue in line with the illiteracy of the peasants. Standard private farms do have technical experts that monitors their farms and they are the ones making gains of this tomato crises in Nigeria.

Buhari government seems more preoccupied with importing grass and creating national grazing routes for his herdsmen than attending to food security.

Am in no way absolving the government at all level from blame but saying the universities are just hearing the news like we are doing now and they had no knowledge of it prior to this total loss proves that they are disconnected from their surrounding communities or don't the faculty and students in the department of Agric Extension department go on field study?

I don't think any school farm is affected. But school farm focus on some cross like maize, cassava. They hardly goes on perishable. It is business for them.

I mean farms outside the school, how do students acquire practical knowledge if they do not interact with the local farmers?

there is no interaction between students and farmers in Nigeria.
Each School has a farm land. They assign some portion to students instructing them to plant a specific variety and monitor them based on what they were taught. Every other thing is theory. Head Knowledge. But those that want to further takes up the responsibility of carrying individual research even beyound the borders of Nigeria. But Their work only ends on papers.
