Buhari Ignores Britain’s Advice, Moves Truckloads Of Soldiers To The Niger Delta by Nobody: 1:09pm On May 24, 2016 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, May 20, 2016 said he ordered a heightened military presence in the restive Niger Delta region to deal with a resurgence of attacks on oil and gas facilities, a day after yet another pipeline explosion. This is contrary the advice of Nigeria’s former colonial master Britain, whose foreign minister Philip Hammond warned on Saturday that military action would not end a wave of attacks in the southern swamps because it did not address rising anger among residents over poverty despite sitting on much of Nigeria’s oil wealth. The rise in attacks in the Delta in the last few weeks has driven Nigerian oil output to a more than 20-year low, worsening a drain on public finances. A group calling itself the Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for several sophisticated attacks. Speaking at a meeting with Shell’s upstream head, Andrew Brown, Buhari said he had instructed the chief of naval staff to reorganise and strengthen the military Joint Task Force to deal with the militancy. “We have to be very serious with the situation in the Niger Delta because it threatens the national economy,” Buhari said in a statement. “I assure you that everything possible will be done to protect personnel and oil assets in the region,” he added. Nigeria had several times announced army reinforcements to the Delta but diplomats said the military has achieved little as militants were operating in small groups and hiding in the hard-to-access swamps. “Mr. Brown had appealed for an urgent solution to rising crime and militancy in the Niger Delta,” the presidency said. An industry source told Reuters that major oil firms warned Vice President Yemi Osinbajo this month that a military crackdown was actually fuelling dissent in the Delta. The presidency statement also quoted Brown as saying Shell would not pull out of Nigeria despite the violence and that it was in talks with state energy firm NNPC for new oil and gas projects. There was no immediate comment from Shell, but its country chair said in an interview published on Sunday the firm was committed to long-term investment in the West African nation. Buhari’s comments came after locals said a gas pipeline operated by NNPC was attacked late on Thursday. The pipeline, which connects the Escravos oil terminal to Warri, supplies gas to different parts of the country. Eric Omare, a spokesman for the Ijaw Youth Council, a youth umbrella, said the attack occurred near the village of Ogbe Ijoh, near Warri, on the pipeline belonging to NNPC. Resident James Dadiowei said he heard a “loud bang” at the pipeline, but an NNPC spokesman was unable to confirm the attack. On Thursday, intruders blocked access to Exxon Mobil’s terminal exporting Qua Iboe, Nigeria’s largest crude stream. And, earlier this month, Shell workers at Nigeria’s Bonga facilities were evacuated. In February, the Avengers claimed an attack on an undersea pipeline, forcing Shell to shut a 250,000 barrel-a-day Forcados terminal. The group also claimed responsibility for blasting a Chevron platform in early May, shutting the Warri and Kaduna refineries. Power outages across Nigeria worsened as gas supplies were also affected. The army said on Sunday it had arrested several suspected members of the Avengers, but locals said they had been freed. “They were released on Wednesday evening,” Omare said. Residents said the military had described them as Avengers but locals had protested they were Chevron pipeline inspectors who had shown the soldiers arresting them their identity cards. Militant attacks have spiked since authorities issued in January an arrest warrant for a prominent former militant leader who with other rebels in 2009 agreed to stop blowing up pipelines in exchange for cash, a plan Buhari has trimmed as part of an anti-graft drive. http://www.nigerianewspaper.com.ng/2016/05/buhari-ignores-britains-advice-moves.html |

Sctests: We're all going to learn the hard way. Even before now, bayelsa couldn't pay 5months salary. I wonder what would happen if this dwindling revenue continues to drop. The worst that happened to GEJ was an election loss. The worst buhari will get is election loss in 2019 and that's if he wishes to contest. Now tell me those that'll lose or gain? 5 Likes 1 Share |

The thread that separates BH from ND militants is very tiny. They've humiliated the FG a lot, they need to get a dose of some punitive actions before we talk about negotiations. 1 Like |

Terry68: How? Will you and the militants not go through the same economic hardship with the 97 percenters? Will you not queue at the same stations, suffer the same blackouts and buy the dollar at the same price? Meanwhile ONLY the 5 percenters will suffer the environmental degradation, ecological destruction, military bombardment and lack of external investors. Talk about cutting your throat to annoy your neck. I still cannot believe people can be so collectively foolish. Blow everything up and when you're done face the South East.! 7 Likes |

Who knows? Perhaps NDA activities have international backing in Britain and the West. Britain can shove her advice! PMB cannot simply fold his arms and allow hungry terrorists to ravage oil installations, just like that. If this happened in Britain, wouldn't Britain respond in like manner? 2 Likes |

QuotaSystem:spot on..... The bombardment of pipelines in the lower Niger is what I out rightly stand against. Though I'm from that region. But don't you think the president's tyrant esque approach will backfire rather than remedying the current violence springing up from that region? 1 Like |

SeunWedsLinda: Do you think the militants demands are reasonable or even remotely realistic? Left to me, I would encourage President Buhari to bombard the Niger Delta with unprecedented development and cleanup, to reveal the true nature of the criminals and iPods who are hiding under the regions troubles and lack of leadership to deceive and misinform the people. The fact remains that the FG cannot be blackmailed, definitely not with violence. 6 Likes |

QuotaSystem:is asking for resource control and the release of some persons which the FG deliberately went against court orders not realistic? You my friend are an ardent APC supporter.... I myself am an APC supporter as well but the policies and the modus operandi of this administration sometimes make me regret ever voting APC into power.... Now you're all for the wanton destruction of people from a particular region as opposed to the path of diplomacy which international bodies would rather we tow.... Certain questions hang over the unification of this entity called nigeria..... 4 Likes |

Re: Buhari Ignores Britain’s Advice, Moves Truckloads Of Soldiers To The Niger Delta by CSTR6: 3:29pm On May 24, 2016 |
QuotaSystem:No. That is a pretty loopsided and parasitic reasoning. Their environment is already polluted. Not blowing whatever up will not stop it being polluted by oil production anyway. Stopping or discouraging large scale oil exploration would actually make the land to recover naturally overtime, and also preserve the crude for a deserving generation inside or outside the Nigerian nationhood. It is foolishness to allow your wealth to be carted off because you are scared of losing crumbs. It is time for your buhari to focus on northern and western resources.Everybody with a brain can agree that the niger-delta environment is tired. I don't support NDA actions because i dislike violence in every form, but i think there is a logic to it. 4 Likes |
