Nigeria Built On Fraudulent Federalism – Amosun by Omooba77: 9:35pm On May 26, 2016
ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Thursday,  described the federalism being practised in Nigeria as  fraudulent. Amosun  argued that the resources allocated to the centre when compared to the one allocated to the states was quite disproportionate, given the fact that states have more responsibilities than the centre. The governor said  this in Abeokuta on Thursday while delivering the commemorative lecture 2016 Democracy Day, with the theme: ‘Democracy in Nigeria, the pains, the gains: Ogun example.’ The event was organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State chapter, as part of activities to mark Democracy Day on Sunday. He said, “The federalism enshrined in our Constitution is an important area of our democracy. But do we have a good federalism in Nigeria? “What we have in Nigeria has been described as fraudulent federalism, because a federalism that put all the power, all the levy and all the money at the centre but put all the responsibility at the state is not a good federalism. Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/nigeria-built-on-fraudulent-federalism-amosun/

Our system of government, alias, feeding bottle, unitary system of government is the stumbling block. It doesn't matter who occupies Aso Rock, if we don't replace this backward system with a more responsible, true federalism, Nigeria shall never experience any peace and development.

God bless the Governor for stating the truth everyone knows about Nigeria. We must decentralise this system and give more powers and responsibilities to the states and local government areas.

Lalasticalala, please.

Amosun's federalism isn't talking about all the states generating resources and sending certain percentage to the Central. This is the true federalism.

Amosun's federalism is only envious of the large percentage of the resources being generated by the Nation, but smaller percentage given to the States despite the larger responsibilities placed on the state.

So obvious he doesn't like the current sharing formula of the nation's Commonwealth!

Nigeria was structured so that the northerners can afford to be uneducated and unproductive but still reap financial and political benefits.
Who am I to blame them anyway, the most cowardly and shortsighted West Africans are Southern Nigerians.
The productivity, innovation, economy, academia and anything Nigeria can be proud of is anchored on the south. Why can't southern leaders come together and structure this country in a way that is geared towards progress and develoment? They would rather play second fiddle to northern politicians.
This Country called Nigeria has been cursed by the devil.

Correct. Emphasis should be on each state or region controlling their resources and paying a certain percentage to the centre.

How does the nation in question generate this fund? Was it not through the percentage given by the state to the federal? If really he is not preaching true federalism, I wonder what he is trying to air out from your own point of view?

I want you to know that the way revenue are shared is a function of circumstances and events, if he is really clamouring for increased in cash to be distributed to state, I think such events has necessitated it and those inflow to state must not remain permanent amount in cash ( it ought to be review)

I know that.
You saying he was not talking about the percentage given to the state was somehow misleading to me not based on the fact he said that, but based on the idea that others may read this and thinks the state does not contribute anything to the federal. I was just trying to avoid misunderstanding.

Please, can you answer this question, the resources the state gives to the federal, is it in equal proportion to the cash given to them in return?

can't categorically answer the question cos the very major resource we depend on is the one from crude oil.

the Oil in the Niger Delta is what caused Nigeria problem. the problem in Nigeria is nothing but greed. there are people who don't just want the states in Niger Delta to grow ahead of them. example are the west and north. this two region are the problem of this country. socking blood.

let go back to the drawing board. the earlier we tell ourselves the truth. and the better for the future of this country. otherwise we will keep delaying the future of this great country. security should be a state or regional problem and not federal government.

if the yoruba in western Nigeria happens to be sitting on the Niger Delta oil well they wouldn't have allowed northerners to owned their well.

the people from Niger Delta are sympathizers of the Niger Delta Avengers. it will be a mission impossible. the Nigeria military can easily be picked without cover, ambushed or sellout by locals. read guerilla warfare from wikipedia.

I see some people telling buhari to crushed the Niger Delta Avengers. some of who don't even know what is called gorilla warfare. for those who are ignorant of it should go and watch Rambo First Blood movie by Sylvester stallone. one man can kill 2000 army. because you don't even know the people you are fighting or looking for. you might even drink with your enemy in the same bar not knowing.

the pictures below is want my dictionary say about federalism. is that what we have in Nigeria? let go back to discuss the 2014 confab.

2014 confab DAT was sabotaged by d APC was a real golden opportunity wasted on d altar of politics. Two things thought out by d amiable GEJ i.e Subsidy removal and confab convocation will go on to haunt this admin as they subtly grasp with d task of leadership and governance.

Since they can't allow the states to control their resources and in the long run get enough resources for the running of their government, I think they should increase their inflow to prevent them from running to the central at any slight change in the revenue generation of such state?

Anyways, right from your first post on this topic you have been on point. cheesy

All yoruba governors are not good governors.

They should instead engage in agriculture to raise money.

All branches of agriculture.

To start the day with hatred and tribalism is not good.

It's just like condemning governors from other regions where few are diligent just like Obiano.

Back to topic when an economy is monopolised and the resource producing majority of the country's income drop in value, ofcourse inflation, unemployment, etc will set in. Just like the state governor said, every region suppose to hit the ground running by bringing something to the table instead of perching on one source for lively hood. From the onset, we have never practice federalism.

It is a pity that many of the staunch advocates of true federalism and the restructuring of Nigeria like Tinubu, Fayemi, Osoba, etc who have always voiced out their displeasures at the asphyxiating nature of our pseudo-federalist system of government have suddenly gone mute since their party became the ruling party.
One would have expected that they would have advised the President to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Convention or convoke a new one. But none of these has happened. It now seems to them that all is well with the federalism we practise in the country.

Amosun's understanding of what federalism is is absolutely inchoate. He appears to be only covetous of the huge revenue that gets to the coffers of the federal government and looks like one of those state governors who love to go cap in hand to Abuja for a measly federal allocation.

True federalism is the only way out of the current logjam--both political and economical that we found ourselves in. States should be equal partners in the administration of this country and not subordinates. The long years of military rule brought us to this end. It is really disheartening that sixteen years after the return to democracy, nothing has been done to correct the anomaly.
