President Muhammadu Buhari has formally
launched measures being taken by his
administration to reduce the current economic
hardship being faced by Nigerians.
The president on Sunday formally unveiled what
he called “by far the most ambitious social
protection programme” in Nigeria’s history.
There is widespread poverty in the land today
owing largely to certain policies of the federal
government, which, the president said were
“necessary pills” to swallow in order to have a
better future.
Speaking on Sunday in a national broadcast to
mark his one year in office, Mr. Buhari said the
social protection programme would seek to start
the process of lifting many citizens out of poverty,
while at the same time creating the opportunity
for many to fend for themselves.
“In this regard, five hundred billion Naira has
been appropriated in the 2016 budget for social
intervention programmes in five key areas,” he
said.
He also said his administration was committed to
providing job creation opportunities for five
hundred thousand teachers and one hundred
thousand artisans across the nation.
“5.5 million children are to be provided with
nutritious meals through our school feeding
programme to improve learning outcomes, as well
as enrolment and completion rates.
“The conditional cash transfer scheme will provide
financial support for up to one million vulnerable
beneficiaries, and complement the enterprise
programme which will target up to one million
market women; four hundred and sixty thousand
artisans; and two hundred thousand agricultural
workers, nationwide.
“Finally, through the education grant scheme, we
will encourage students studying sciences,
technology, engineering and maths, and lay a
foundation for human capital development for the
next generation,” he said.

Mr President I don't support this at all

This money if given given to the unemployed graduates with sound business plan will have better effect on the Nigerian population

Please let's rethink this idea

The intervention fund can lift millions out of poverty if judiciously put to use. It can help create a better and more egalitarian society if it does not end in private pockets.
I only hope this won't be another grandiose promise by the President.

The money is for extreme poor,.
What re graduates bringing to the table..?
Did they spend all their lives in school in order to add to the population of unemployment or learn to be innovative and add values to the society .

Buhari formally launches N500b Social Protection Programme

May 29 2016

These are: Job creation opportunities for 500,000 teachers and 100,000 artisans across the nation. Also, 5.5 million children are to be provided with nutritious meals through the school feeding programme to improve learning outcomes, as well as enrolment and completion rates.

There is also the conditional cash transfer scheme which will provide financial support for up to 1 million vulnerable beneficiaries, and complement the enterprise programme – which will target up to 1 million market women; 400,000 artisans; and 200,000 agricultural workers, nationwide.

Moreover, through the education grant scheme, government will encourage students studying sciences, technology, engineering and maths, and lay a foundation for human capital development for the next generation.

This is good. But the devil is in the details...
it's all about the implementation.

The fact that World Bank will be assisting with the direct cash transfers to the most vulnerable is a bit comforting. Yet there is so much that can go wrong with the kind of civil service and executive architecture we have.

Would have kicked against this idea had it been proposed by Jona, the clueless one, but I trust Buhari.
