I don't know what exactly happened, but when mum did it early this year, all the tomatoes got foul taste. We couldn't use them for stew anywhere anymore even tho they were refrigerated always. Almost two baskets.
I think it's a 50-50 thingy 4 Likes |

vanpeele: You can also use ketchup or salad cream containers. I personally don't like them because of the small opening.
BTW lalasticlala...see free lifehack for tomato . Op you said no refrigeration but you later included the fact that one needs to refrigerate after opening. |

vanpeele: Hi everyone,
I'm happy to see how everyone's crying for the "common" tomato. Most people (wey get sense) will start preparing for next year by either farming, gardening, or preserving.
My first thread was on very cheap farming but here's another for preserving our darling tomato when it becomes cheap again.
With this method, one can store fresh tomato paste for over a year but guaranteed 1 year, that's if everything's done right.
What you need are 1. Tomato 2. Jam jar (it must be the sort you see in the pics....plastics won't work at all)
Step 1. Blend your tomato or take it where it's grinded in bulk (you don't have to squeeze the water out unless it's spoilt)
Step 2 Put the blended tomato in a pot (small or big depending on the amount blended). Boil the tomato till all it's water has evaporated and has become paste (try not to let it burn).
Step 3 Let it cool down. Scope some paste into a jam jar till it's filled up, then seal it properly with its cap.
Step 4 Put the sealed tomato paste in a pot of water till it's completely submerged. Allow the pot of water to reach boiling point, then leave to boil for 10-15 mins (don't worry...it won't break). Take them out of the pot and allow to cool. Put then in cartons and store in a cool dry place. No need for fridge. #Shikenan
PLEASE NOTE: 1. No matter the amount of jam jars you put in the pot of water, MAKE SURE THEY'RE COMPLETELY SUBMERGED BEFORE BOILING.
2. JAM JARS WHICH KNIVES WERE USED TO OPEN THEM WON'T WORK. Only normally opened jam jars would work because they're still air tight.
3.Once you open the jar, use the amount you need then refrigerate.
Feel free to ask questions.
Pls OP, can we also do this for shombo, tatashe and rodo? |

Never ever do this crap!
Tomato is a vegetable and it's the worst type of food to preserve. It can be contaminated at any given time and the longer it stays without refrigeration, the faster it loses its nutritional value! What is wrong with eating fresh tomato?
Tomato is not scarce and we're not in any civil war for anyone to take this useless risk. 1 Like |

Well done. Would have been a lot more helpful during the time of surplus, now people can barely afford to buy fresh tomatoes talk more of preserving them. There's still the problem of epileptic power supply and refrigerating 1 Like |

This is what i've been doing when going to sch. Normally lasts like 2 months though. in sch though, i dont get to use a refrigerator after first use, i only preserve it with a layer of vegetable oil ontop of it. .
For those who would wanna try it, trust me, you would hate it's taste if u allow even a small portion of the burnt part of the tomatoes into it 2 Likes |

To be honest with you. I am hearing for the first but alot of experts responded that already have the info.
But, one improtant issue you mentioned about Non-Refrigeration for preservation for 1 Year duration, you still mentioned refrigeration @ the tail end of your post.
Is it after you open the each Jar for use because of air contamination or what you saying ? Yes..when you open for use |
