Life often plays games with people's minds and doles out different cards to different people: complaints and quiet desperation for many; lots of achievements for others. So many people seem not to have a grip of their lives, while few others seem to have it all in place

For starters, here are 5 mindsets you need to discard if you are going to "go far" in life:

1) Waiting for life to happen: We live in a fast-paced century. Life is dynamic, and so do you. In the technology market for instance, phone manufacturers keep on trying to outdo one another in order to stay in the competition and get the attention of the ever growing number of phone users. It's time to quit observing life from the fringes; it's time to step in and become a key player. Life owes nothing to the observers. Every day, people are making the news, some for the good reasons, others for the bad. They were able to face their fears, take whatever risks that they had to take and pushed themselves through. Nobody is going to push through for you; nobody is going to take your decisions for you. You just have to do it.

2) Thinking you will succeed in life just because you went to school: The importance of getting a good education cannot be overemphasized. However, life does not just happen for people just because they have some college degree or even a postgraduate. To succeed in life requires a complex mix of attitudes, mindsets and habits. Incidentally, these traits are personalized. It is still possible to see people that went to school coming out and putting up behaviours that are totally unacceptable. People may not be able to get their ideal jobs or achieve what they want to do in life even after successfully obtaining these degree certificates. There are now no guarantees of jobs after leaving school.

3)Thinking you will not succeed in life just because you did not go to school: Success in life requires a good and consistent degree of personal motivation, attitudes and habits which are not automatically conferred on individuals just by going to school. It is a matter of choice and discipline. A couple of celebrated people in our world today were not so academically outstanding. In 2010, only 62 percent of U.S. college graduates had a job that required a college degree. 51 percent of employed 2014 American college graduates are in jobs that don’t require a degree. Simply put, you can get jobs without going to a higher institution. However, you can choose to develope yourself further while on the job. Some Nigerians too have made it to the top without any degree certificates.

4) Thinking you've learnt enough: Nobody knows it all. The biggest room in life still remains that of self improvement. Be eager to develope yourself daily. New things happen daily. Systems change overnight. There is need to keep abreast of things going on in the environment and make necessary adjustments.

5) Failing to develope your skills and talents: So, you went to school and studied this course just because it was the in-thing, right? Now you've got it only to realize you lost out on opportunities to master your skills and talents. The time is gone when people studied a course just because of the money and prestige attached to it. Chances are that many people had the same "bright idea" as you did, and studied the same course or something similar. Now you have to compete for few job spaces available. It becomes difficult now to fall back on your area of talent because it may have been long neglected A survey by CareerBuilder showed that about one-third (31 percent) of college-educated American workers age 35 and older are never employed within their degree field.

Standing out in a world of billions of people is really a herculean task. So many get lost in the crowd, others give up along the way, while few eventually make it to a place of fulfillment and influence.

What do you think?
