According to Unizik Vice Chancellor, Prof Boniface Egboka, who spoke in Awka, the university cannot exceed the National Universities Commission's (NUC) directives and quota for admission, adding that it is sad that the 30,000 prospective students are qualified for admission.

Egboka, further lamented that the institution cannot go beyond the quota, adding that a number of the prospective students would have no option but to retake the admission examination as the school cannot admit all.

He however announced that an appeal letter has been forwarded to National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja, requesting for an admission vacancy of 6,000 to accommodate those who are qualified but were unfortunate not to gain admission.

"It is unfortunate and sad that we have over 30,000 qualified potential undergraduates for admission, but only 3,700 can be admitted.

"When you consider the NUC admission quota and guidelines you would discover that a lot of them will not gain admission. Though we may not have too much space, I still believe that we can still give more people the opportunity of being admitted and already we have written the NUC, calling for an increase in the quota to 6,000 to accommodate others.

"We can still manage and take on the students. It is unfortunate that most of them are qualified but not all would succeed."

Egboka also explained that those who are against the introduction of Post University Matriculation Examinations do not understand its advantages in the university system.

"Before we used to organise individual university admission examinations; then we later had a general entrance admission by JAMB. But most of those that gain admission into the universities drop out after the first academic session and you wonder if they were the same people that actually passed the JAMB.

"So the examination is aimed at ensuring that those who are university materials and are set to study are admitted into our institutions. We are making teaching and learning very effective and convince and not to admit people that would end up becoming social deviants because they never merited being university undergraduates."
