The Chinese ICT giants, Huawei Technologies is embarking on the training of 2,000 young Nigerians in the field of information and communications technology. The program comes as part of the Federal Government’s youth and student development and job creation programme.

This is seemingly in direct response to President Buhari’s drive to empower and encourage young Nigerians in the areas of science, mathematics, engineering and information technology.

As the biggest Information and Communications Technology company in the world and the major ICT company in Nigeria, Huawei is leading the charge by bringing first class technical training to qualified young Nigerians.

PREVIOUS ICT TRAINING PROGRAMMES…

However, this is not the first time Huawei has intervened positively in the area of youth empowerment. In 2013, Huawei embarked on an ICT training programme for 1,000 young Nigerian women. According to Hover Gao, the then Vice President of Huawei West Africa, “The program was part of Huawei’s commitment of localization, technology transfer to Nigeria and employment promotion”.

Yet, Huawei’s impact as an enabling corporate citizen in Nigeria, dates back to 2004. This was when the company established its ICT Training Centre in Abuja. So far, the centre has trained more than 5,000 young Nigerians in the area of ICT. Huawei was the first ICT company to establish a training Centre in Abuja, in spite of being one of the youngest companies in the Nigerian ICT sector at the time.

Interestingly, Huawei not only creates IT entrepreneurs through its training centre but also employs technical staff from the pool of experts it develops. As a result, the competition for this year’s training events is expected to be high as registration closes on the 15th of June 2016.

This year’s program comes at a most auspicious time. On one hand, it compliments the Federal Government’s strong focus and emphasis on youth empowerment especially in IT and science. Also, the program further underscores the growing relationship between the Nigerian and Chinese governments.

Huawei continues to deepen its involvement in the Nigerian economy, supporting ALL the telecoms providers in the country.

As the 3rd biggest smart phone manufacturer in the world, Huawei also delivers improved value propositions to Nigerian customers with its high quality yet competitively priced devices.
