ORLANDO, Fla.—A gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire in a gay nightclub in Orlando early Sunday, carrying out a shooting rampage that left 50 dead and 53 injured, in one of the deadliest shooting massacres in U.S history.
Police shot and killed the suspected killer at about 5 a.m. after an hourslong standoff with police, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said earlier Sunday. The man was wearing a suspicious device, carrying an assault rifle and a handgun, and took hostages, Mr. Mina said.
Two counterterrorism officials identified the alleged gunman as Omar S. Mateen, 29 years old, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. The officials said he worked as a security guard, had a gun license and was a U.S. citizen.

Officials are still trying to understand the motive for the attack but said there are some initial indications he was attracted to radical Islamic ideology.
One of the officials said law enforcement believed the gunman lived with his sister and her husband. A Florida state database shows Mr. Mateen had two firearms licenses, a security officer license and a statewide firearms license. Both are listed as scheduled to expire in September 2017.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the massacre, FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Ron Hopper said.
“We’re at the very early stages,” he said. “We will determine officially whether it’s a hate crime or a terrorism incident or even a violent crime once we have all the facts in place.”
Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Sunday declared a state of emergency, and officials in Orlando declared a state of emergency in the city. “Today we’re dealing with something that we never imagined and is unimaginable,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said at a news briefing Sunday.
The shooting began around 2 a.m. at Pulse, a gay nightclub in downtown Orlando.

“All the killing that was done was with an assault rifle, a single weapon...it was done very quickly also,” Rep. Alan Grayson, (D., Fla.) said Sunday morning. “There’s blood everywhere” in the club, he said, noting that he spoke to someone who had seen the club following the shooting. “There’s an enormous amount of evidence to be collected systematically over the course of many hours.”
Chief Mina said authorities found a handgun and “an AR-15-type assault rifle,” along with an unknown number of ammunition rounds. Police used an armored vehicle to rescue more than 30 people inside the club around 5 a.m.
Trauma surgeon Michael Cheatham said many of the wounded were in critical condition Sunday at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where surgeries were continuing. He said six trauma surgeons responded to the hospital after the shooting.
Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said Orlando’s close-knit lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community has been “dramatically impacted.” The community is united, she said, adding that “what we saw last night does not reflect what we feel in our hearts and our souls here in Orange County.”

An early morning post from the club’s Facebook page administrator said, “Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running.” An updated post at about 6 a.m. said, “Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event.”
Multiple emergency vehicles responded, including the Orlando Fire Department’s bomb squad and hazardous material team. Police said via Twitter that a noise heard near the shooting site was a “controlled explosion.” No other details were provided.
President Barack Obama was briefed about the Orlando shootings on Sunday morning by Lisa Monaco, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, the White House said in a statement. The White House said Mr. Obama asked to receive regular updates as federal officials work with the Orlando police on the case.
The incident follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who was killed after her concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old Florida man who later killed himself. Ms. Grimmie was a YouTube sensation and former contestant on “The Voice.”
It also follows a December shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., during which Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, opened fire on a holiday party of his co-workers, killing 14 people and injuring 22. The couple was killed during a shootout with police.
Federal authorities have said Syed Rizwan Farook spent years becoming more radicalized and violence-oriented, in part by watching videos that advocated jihad. On the day of the attack, a Facebook account used by his wife posted a pledge of allegiance to the terror group Islamic State.
Imam Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, said much remains unknown about the Orlando nightclub shooting. “We are mourning, we are sad, we are heartbroken. It’s not really time for any sensational news, and rushing to judgment,” he said.

This is just too bad. Some people think that they have the right to play God. Instead of them to carry their own cross They would be attempting and failing completely to carry another man's own.
