Tragedy struck early this morning in Owode area, Ajah, Lagos State, when five people were confirmed dead after eating a meal of yam flour at midnight.

P.M.News learnt that the incident occurred after calls by Islamic faithful to gather at the residence of a popular philanthropist, who offered them the free meal as mercy offering in the spirit of the ongoing Ramadan fasting.

It was gathered that five persons have so far been confirmed dead this morning. An unconfirmed number of those that also took the meal are presently being created at various hospitals in the locality.

Most of the people that died were identified as okada riders, who usually assembled at the man’s compound.

Two of the Alhaji’s children, his wife and mother, are still in the hospital.

P.M.News further gathered that semovita, eba and rice were among the meals served at the man’s residence early this morning, though all those who ate the food were not affected. Only those who ate the yam flour (amala) were affected.

At the Alhaji’s residence this morning, his relatives claimed that the food may have been contaminated, denying the speculation that the incident had a spiritual undertone.

P.M.News gathered that the Alhaji has been offering free meals to people in the area for many years.

At a nearby private hospital, where most of the victims were rushed to, scores of okada riders and families of the victims gathered to discuss the fate of their dear ones.

Wearing a white gown, the popular philanthropist said he was short of words. A source at the hospital confirmed that five persons have died while many others are still unconscious, including some relatives of the Alhaji.

As at the time of going to press, four corpses had been taken to the mortuary. P.M.News efforts to speak with the medical director of the hospital, on the health condition of the other victims, proved abortive.

A staff of the hospital said his boss was too busy to speak with our correspondent.
