Neighbours Germany and Poland will go head to head on Thursday night at the Stade de France. A win for either will secure qualification into the Round of 16 following their respective wins in the opening round of matches.

While all eyes were on Robert Lewandowski, who scored 13 goals in qualifying, it was his striking partner Arkadiusz Milik who grabbed the only goal of the game against a frustrating Northern Ireland side.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny suffered an injury in the game and is an early doubt for Thursday’s match. Lukasz Fabianski would be a more than capable replacement should Szczesny not recover in time.

Sevilla midfielder and man of the match Grzegorz Krychowiak gave his thoughts after the match: “We understood that the first match is always very difficult, we were prepared for that. The next games will show that we can be even better and go further. We can do a lot, but we shouldn’t be overly optimistic having won only the first match. Joachim Low used Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze as a false-9 in his side’s 2-0 win over Ukraine. Although far from vintage, Germany did enough to impress in their opening match. Toni Kroos stole the show, dictating the play in midfield.

Shkodran Mustafi’s first-half header from Kroos’ free-kick opened the scoring and the match was sealed when substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger coolly tapped home Mesut Ozil’s brilliant cross in the final minute of the match. Defender Mats Hummels missed the game through injury and is expected to return to the line-up in place of goalscorer Mustafi.
