Would love to know traditional methods (if any) on how to extend the freshness of harvested African pears for at least 2 weeks.

Our local way to extend it to 6 days=
a. Harvest carefully without inflicting wounds
b.keep dry
c.spread on a fat dry jute bag in a well-ventilated place.

We are commencing the grafting at splash agro nurseries .(25/06/16). Expect the m here.

Put them in a modified atmosphere. Fruits can be kept in good condition for several months in a.modified atmosphere.

Fruits go bad with time due to the normal metabolic processes that goes on in cells of the fruits. If you can slow down the rate of metabolism of the fruits, then you can preserve the fruit. One simple way to slow down the metabolism is to freeze the fruit, if it is a fruit that can withstand freezing.

Freezing is expensive and not all fruits can withstand freezing, that is where modified atmosphere fruit preservation comes in.

If you reduce the oxygen level in the air in a fruit container to about 2% and increase the carbon dioxide % to between 2 to 5%, you can then drastically reduce the metabolism of the fruit and make it last for several weeks to months without going bad depending on the fruit and the conditions used.

That is how they are able to ship bananas for example from south America to Europe by ship for several weeks without the banana going bad.

Type modified atmosphere or controlled atmosphere fruit preservation into Google and learn more about it.
