June 12 will forever be a memory in the life of every Nigerian. It was a day tribalism and religious sentiments were defeated as Nigerians voted for a Muslim/Muslim ticket in an election adjudged to be the most free and fair in the nation’s history. Calls have been made in recent years to make June 12 Democracy Day and not May 29, an idea I support.

However, let me point out the hypocrisy of the June 12 champions. Nigerians, especially from the South-West, have been calling on successive governments to immortalise the late MKO Abiola. Even when one of their own and the greatest beneficiary of June 12, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, was president, no move was made to immortalise Abiola. In fact, Obasanjo used every opportunity to convince people that Abiola was not the messiah and made attempts to rubbish Abiola anytime he travelled abroad. When former President Goodluck Jonathan made an attempt to name University of Lagos after MKO Abiola ,it was the same people from the South-West that opposed it.
