Most, if not all, of us have a favourite song. Whether it's pop, rock, blues, jazz or classical, we can all agree that music contains a very strong element that moves our hearts, inspires us to be jolly or attempt new things, and at times makes us feel happy even when we're down.

For Christians, however, there's a common concern that arises every time music is played on the radio or in the bus station: can I listen to secular music and still be Christian? Honestly, Christians should consider when choosing where to be and which music they listen to.

1) Everything is permissible, but not beneficial

Paul said that all things are permitted, but not everything is good (1 Corinthians 6:12, 10:23). That's the same with secular music. Being a Christian doesn't mean thrashing the radio or asking the fast food crew to stop playing songs played by secular artists, but it does mean you should not listen to songs filled with ungodly lyrics.

While there are secular songs that sound good and bring good messages, there are many secular songs that encourage adultery, sexual lust, materialism, greed, hatred and bitterness, among other things. We should be careful what songs we listen to.

2) We must starve the flesh, feed the Spirit

Genuine Christ-followers know this: anything that would exalt the flesh and kill the spirit should be shut down in our lives. Whatever we feed grows healthy, and whatever we starve dies. Following this logic, we should instead choose to build up our spirit with praise instead of our flesh with soulish music.

James said, "is anyone cheerful? Let him sing Psalms." (see James 5:13) The Bible tells us that whenever any man or woman of God is happy, we should firstly sing praises unto the Lord.

Take for example David, who sang many songs of praise to the Lord (see book of Psalms). Or Mary, who sang to the Lord because He has looked down on the lowly (Luke 1:46-55). Or Moses, who sang to the Lord while his sister Miriam pulled the tambourine out and sang while dancing because of His deliverance (Exodus 15).

Think about it. Would you like to sing "Dorobucci" in front of Christ during your prayer time?

3) We shouldn't be yoked with unbelievers

"What has Christ in common with belial?" said Paul (see 2 Corinthians 6:14-16). Christians shouldn't behave like the world, and the area of music isn't exempted from this.

Some say that they only listen to secular music so that they can reach out to their friends, but honestly, you can still reach out without doing that. Christ did not behave like the world, yet He fulfilled His work of atoning for our sins and reconciling us to the Father.

STILL DRINKING AND CLUBBING AS A CHRISTIAN?

By socialising in clubs you do not bring people up to your level in Christ, they bring you down to their level in the world. A person cannot respect someone who is not fully committed to that which they profess to believe in.

I used to justify myself, by saying that I did not get drunk, and so I only drunk solf drinks. But the reality was I paid for alcoholic beverages which aided my friends (who did not attend church meetings) in getting drunk when it was my turn to pay for the round.

I would be sat at the bar, while across the room, other people were telling dirty jokes, getting drunk, taking the name of the Lord in vain and the next day I would hypocritically be in church, hands in the air, sing praises to Jesus. I called myself a Christian yet did not live up to the standards that God had set. My testimony was compromised on a daily, if not weekly basis, *I was leading weaker brethren into sin and I was supporting the Devil’s ministry. How you may ask?...

Firstly, by going to such establishments.
Secondly, at church talking about where I had been the night before, (thus encouraging those of age to visit a pub or club).
Thirdly, by inviting other Christians out for a drink.

As one preacher said, “Either act like a Christian or change your name to heathen!”

God states and declares, “Be holy in all your conduct...because it is written, 'be holy because I am holy'” (1 Peter 1:15-16) because, ‘without holiness, no man shall see the Lord’ (Hebrews 12:14), “Anything that is not righteous is sinful” which is in accord with 1 John 5:17, 'All unrighteousness is sin...

Not a set of rules

Friends, this isn't about a set of rules. Rather, it's about fixing what's in your heart – would you rather fill your heart with God's praises, or fill it with the world's chorus?

HAPPY SUNDAY TO YOU ALL smiley smiley smiley smiley

I really don't think listening to secular music makes me an unbeliever. It depends on the kind of 'secular' music I listen too. I love rock and soul for instance. so if I listen to ASA or cold play. that makes me a sinner? I think the content is what matters the most. and it really shouldn't be a struggle. There are a songs that just irritate me. and that's not because I'm a Christian. but because those things just don't interest me. A full song about ASS and DRUGS. How can that be of interest to me. I love lyrics . I love words and poetry. It takes a lot to make me enjoy a song. and I really think in this time and age a Christian should learn the balance. if not your Christianity would be so old school you would scare people from serving God. remember Christianity is a lifestyle. and it should be an attractive lifestyle.

No.. secular musics are all devil's device

Can't blame us christain artists are boring and not creative, they just feel because it has Christ in it we should just enjoy them. Though I enjoyed grits and women of faith. I'd rather listen to Bon jovi who has nice lyrical content than some boring Christians songs with no work put into it. But if you can recommend some good Christians artists I don't mind.

From my personal experience, the two can't go together. The deeper you'll want to go with God, The more you'll have to consecrate yourself

I listen to all spheres of music. am a fan of HipHop and pop and am a Christian. it doesn't matter the song you listen to, as far as you don't get influenced negatively.

Meaning that a good christian shouldn't study music abi? As a music student, not minding your religion, you can't listen to just scared music. You will need the knowledge of secular songs to advance. You think that makossa groove was developed in the church? But whenever it comes up during praise and worship, good christians will dance to it.

You can be a christian and still club/listen to circular music but you can't do that as a born again(depending on the message in they type of music)

The truth is before something changes us it takes a gradual process and finally we are caught in the web of something foreign to who we were then. It depends on the type of message your circular music conveys and of truth club is no saints zone.

Christianity is a religion that believes in Christ and to be a true Christian you must be born again. Its either you live by faith or by law.

Finally, show me a perfect man and i will show you Jesus. There are some things we cant help and things we can. If there is no sin there will be no forgiveness yet shall we abide in sin so that grace may abound?

Give to Caesar what belongs to him and God what belongs to God.

You can draw your line yourself now.

Our pastor do said dat we listen to secular music and we still av a way of defending it. Even the so called secular musician are not in line with God and dey do sing worldly songs, but some of their songs do inspired, so my pastor said we shldn't av anytin 2 do wit dem and their music but am trowing a question to NAIRALANDERS dat the social medias we used to preach to pple e.g FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, and many more, are those inventors are christians or Gods servant?? If NO! Den we shld stop using it to preach the gospel coz they are worldly peoples. The bible say ''Do not love the world or the things in the world'' As for me, secular music on my phone is like 20% and the ar inspirational songs the rest are gospel.

Fully agree with everything you have said, bro. Good to see a fellow rock lover on this forum as well.

Thing with music is, it is food for the soul. Whatever you feed your soul eventually, gradually becomes a big part of you. Now, I have always told people, there is a BIG difference between HEARING a song and LISTENING to a song. The way the society is at the moment, so called secular music is more or less ubiquitous. There is simply no avoiding them no matter where you go. I, for one, do not appreciate most of these secular songs. That doesn't mean I don't hear them - I do. However, do I LISTEN to them? Big NO!!! Do I even bother to look beyond the catchy beats and into the lyrics, heck NO!!!

So, what happens when you put on the radio and the first thing you hear is Wizkid's In My Bed? Or On top your matter? Or 2face's Enter The Place? What then do you do. If you switch off the radio, your neighbor is playing it. If your neighbor is not playing it, the shop nearby is or the barber or the hairdresser or the common artisan.

So, as I have said, it's easier just hearing these songs and not listen to them atall. That way, you are able to sieve out the lewd part of it all - the LYRICS.

But the world today makes it such that there is now a very very thin line between Christianity, as a religion, and worldliness. Simply put, RELIGION IS A BIG PROBLEM in our world today. The same guy who sings 'I wanna Bleep you' today is seen in church tomorrow singing 'it is well with my soul'. The same babe you saw in the club on Friday in a skimpy gown is the lead chorister in church on Sunday. This is why I prefer to look beyond religion these days. I simply avoid churches that preach Christianity as a religion. It is more A WAY OF LIFE than anything else, and should be seen as such.

That way, the confusions and temptations of the world are much more easier to handle and jettison.

What exactly makes music secular or Christian?...is it the music?....the lyrics?...or both? There is not much difference now between secular and Christian music. So @topic...I'll not say yes or now.... but listen to any music that would uplift you. Some widely accepted Christian music is worse than 'secular music'..."I will Bless the Lord"...isn't that in itself blasphemy? ...but that's Christian! 'Lord Show me a Sign"..by DMX..yea..the same DMX... is 'secular'...but wayyyy more uplifting than soooooo many many Christian music.

The answer is CAPITAL "NO". The two cannot work together. It's either you are for God or for the devil. You cannot be on the fence. No matter the number of times they (the singer) mention the name of Jesus in a worldly music, that does not make it acceptable before God. As a true child of God that has the hope of going to heaven, you are not suppose to take pleasure in listening to worldly music. Music like "Na God win ooo, na God win. They say my music no go sale, na God win". As far as I'm concern any body that wants to go to heaven, that music is worldly and should not be listened to by a true Christian. "He that has this hope of going to heaven should purify himself even as Christ is pure". Know he not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Pls
kinda agree with ur points, but not completely. do u know the secret life of some so called gospel singers? I challenge u to watch Kingdom Africa television on dstv, see musical videos of somr so called gospel singers, Korede bello is more decent than most. tell u how I tag a song spiritual? how my soul respond to it, u play some christian songs and you start dancing wildly without knowing it, that's not a spiritual song to me.
