The Defence Headquarters has scrapped the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, as part of the efforts to ensure better protection of oil pipelines and curtail insecurity in the Niger Delta. The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen.Rabe Abubakar, said in a statement on Wednesday that Operation Pulo Shield was replaced with Operation Delta Safe. Abubakar said that the decision was taken in line with the directive of the Defence Headquarters for enhanced efficiency and effectiveness against insecurity and the protection of the nation’s pipelines in the Niger Delta. He said that the new task force with headquarters in Yenagoa had three sectors and five operational bases covering the entire Niger Delta, Ondo and Akwa Ibom States. “The Operation Pulo Shield in the Niger Delta has been scrapped with immediate effect and replaced with Operation Delta Safe. “This is in line with the Defence Headquarters initiative to restructure the Joint Task Force for better service delivery, efficiency and effectiveness in line with the vision and mission of the Chief of Defence Staff to contain the current security challenges in the Niger Delta especially protection of critical national assets and provision of security in the area. “Under this arrangement, the Joint Operational Areas of the new outfit have been delineated into three sectors and five Operational Bases covering the entire Niger Delta, Ondo and Akwa Ibom States. The Headquarters of Operation Delta Safe would be in Yenagoa. “This development, according to Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin becomes expedient in order to inject new tactics and robust operational initiative to tackle the emerging security challenges in the Niger Delta region such as piracy, bunkering, vandalism and other criminalities prevalent in the area.” The statement read.

The Federal government has always has a reason to deploy military in the axis whereas the building is just lying fallow and the Senate prefers the university be sited in Oron, so it makes perfect sense to convert the structure to a Battalion of the Nigerian military

There's no University there!! The Senate would prefer the Maritime institution in Oron be upgraded. The building can serve the military

It would also bring government presence of the region, after all roads and facilities would be built for the military facility as well

Since 1999,there is always a security reason to deploy the military in that axis with resultant loss of lives and resources, I think it's better to prevent it than always respond when the damage is done. There's no way the military facility will be there and there won't be government investment, improved security and intelligence gathering. The military is too far from this epicenter of security concerns

This is a good and cheering news but the military should open a garrison command or batalion in the volatile Gbaramatu axis

The same thing was done in Maiduguri and it helped to improve security and save resources spent in moving men and hardwares to the center of security insurgency

The Nigerian Navy said on Tuesday that the naval Maritime University in Ibuza, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta, would soon commence academic work.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, made the disclosure when he visited the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta in Warri.

Ibas said that the process of obtaining the required approval for already constructed institution was being concluded.

The naval chief said the proposed university was initially conceived as a Navy College.

Ibas explained that the university was established in order to close academic gap which had necessitated the Nigerian Navy sending its personnel abroad to acquire some special skills.

”The moment the Federal Executive Council (FEC) grants the approval to commence operations, the university will start academic activities.

“It is true that the Navy is in the process of obtaining the necessary clearance to have it converted to a university that will serve the navy as well as members of the public.

“You will recall that the Navy undertakes a lot of its courses abroad in some civil institutions.

”So what the Navy has done is to go into partnership with some foreign partners who will assist us in establishing a school that will cater for the needs of the Navy in some areas we are currently deficient.

“The process of getting the university licence is still on-going, we are contacting all the relevant agencies of government for approval,” he said.

Ibas also attributed the relative peace in the Niger Delta region in respect of insurgency to the dialogue approach adopted by various organs of the government.

”You will recall that different organs of government have been dialoguing with the militants concerned, while the military maintains its posture of ensuring that militant activities are curtailed.

”For us as the Navy, in peace and war times, our duty is to ensure we police the general maritime areas and ensure that legitimate business thrives,” he said. (NAN)

This would be great if the property is not allowed to deteriorate further.
