[quote author=HAH post=46794624]To start with resident doctor are not yet doctors but doctor on training, they are the ones we call baby doctors, so the tittle of this tread is misleading.

The residents doctors are still students but get paid more than level 12 officers in federal civil service.

Residency must not be done in government hospital but for you to be a specialist you must go through residency, so any babydoctor that feel cheated should go to a private hospital for residency where he will paid 25k allawee

U are out of ur senses or ur illiteracy is just alarming ... Calling resident doctors baby doctors is the height of stupidity. FYI, these cadre of doctors are the most efficient in terms of work force in govt hospitals, and it can take 3 , 4 , 5 times the total number of years u spent studying ur pathetic course to attain their heights. So just STFU

How many times will you sack a doctor before the completion of his residency training? This cant be possible. If you sack them who are you going to replace them with? No be still doctors that are also part of the strike?

Residency is a stage of graduate medical training. A resident or house officer is a physician (one who holds the degree of M.D., D.O., D.P.M. or MBBS, MBChB, or BMed) who practices medicine usually in a hospital or clinic under the direct or indirect supervision of an attending physician. Successful completion of a residency program is a requirement to obtaining an unrestricted license to practice medicine in many jurisdictions. Residency training may be followed by fellowship or "sub-specialty" training.

Lolzzz. This decision is practically not feasible cos resident docs help train medical students and medical students become residents. It's a vicious circle.
Best solution ban residency in Nigeria, employ at least 10 consultants per unit, if you have the money Mr fg lol . Don't forget to ban private practice oga fg.

Sorry.....but you are confusing ''resident'' and House officer.

In Nigeria....a House officer.....is as you said...'' a physician (one who holds the degree of M.D., D.O., D.P.M. or MBBS, MBChB, or BMed) who practices medicine usually in a hospital or clinic under the direct or indirect supervision of an attending physician.''

After housemanship.....the doctor then gets a full licence to practice in Nigeria.

In Nigeria.....we refer to doctors undergoing ''fellowship or "sub-specialty" training'' as resident doctors. To qualify for residency training....you have to pass the ''Primary'' examinations in your speciality....and then apply to various teaching/tertiary hospitals to do sub-specialty training.

To sum up.....

House officer.....doctor who works under supervision by physician..(on graduation we get a provisional licence).

At the end of house job.....we get the full registration.....and a full licence which we must renew regularly (N6000 for a first timer).

And once we pass the primary...we can now go for sub-speciality training as residents.

And one more thing....Nigerian residents are no baby doctors. Most of them are very very good. They are divided into two categories....junior and senior resident. The senior resident is as good as the consultant ....and in some instances is The Consultant...when the real one is not around.

Quakertellicus 1 mbbs (yes....I am a medical doctor....trained in Nigeria...hoping to do residency here too.!).

Oga Before you spill what you don't know about, hear this. From whom did you hear that Resident Doctors are not Doctors. You even called them Baby Doctors. R u sure you you passed through University @ all. For your information the Resident Doctors are the Backbone of all Teaching Hospitals and FMCS nationwide. The consultants are their Bosses from whom they take directives from and they supervise the work of the Residents. Both the Senior Residents and the consultants most times take decision on Patient management but the Consultants have the Final say and are accountable for every Patient. The fact that the residents are still in post graduate training doesn't make them Inferior or baby Doctors.... Get your facts before spilling thrash...

If NUPENG and PENGASSAN and POLICE and NEPA(PHCN) always go on strike like u guys, cos their job affect our daily lives, do u think u can survive it?

everyday u dr's open ur mouth claimin demi gods, sayin that if they sack u people, lives will be lost. I just have just one question for u Mr consultant, since u have been workin when there was no strike, has people not died?

Now....on to the topic.

Thing is....Nigeria's hospitals need funding. They lack money. (Yes....Buahri spent billions for his Aso Rock Clinic. Meanwhile...one hospital in the US spent 750MILLION USD for research in one year. Convert that into Naira).

The reason why the Govt is sacking doctors is because it is the easy way out. Sack the doctors. Rather than face the real issue...funding...which means only one thing right now....and here it comes...

INCREASE THE HOSPITAL FEES

In my opinion, govt should privatize the teaching hospitals it owns...and redirect funding to primary and secondary heath centers. At the same time....fees should go up there because....we do not have the money to fund health care adequately. (By my calculaion...we need trillions of naira to fund health care in Nigeria. Trillions. Not billions).

But raising the hospital fees is a political no no. So....we keep the fees low...and the funding issues continue. Rise taxes...and there would be riots on the street. So....it is better to sack the doctors...and employ desperate people in their place.(And there are lots of them. I know colleagues who have passed primary since two years ago.....and no residency place yet).

So....we sack the doctors....and pretend the funding problem does not exist.

Nigeria has no choice....we either increase hospital fees...or wait for oil price increase that is never going to come. And even then....we had problems paying doctors a fair wage when oil was above 100 usd per barrel.

Well....a lot of resident doctors do care about the lives of their patients....including one I knew who spent a bit of his salary paying medical bills for indigent patients....and another who ran free clinics in a nearby rural area on weekends.

Of course there are some arrogant chaps.....but that is humanity. Every segment of humanity has its good and bad .

WE just left a 6hrs crucial meeting with the speaker of the house of representatives at the chambers in Abuja. The issue of sack was raised at the meeting. The minister of health and permanent Secretary denied it. The speaker has appealed that the news be ignored.
All members should be rest assured as NARDis coming out stronger and advantaged.
