The people of Britain on Thursday, June 23, voted for Brexit which is to leave the European Union (EU). The Leave campaign secured around 51.8 per cent of the vote. While England voted overwhelmingly for Brexit, Scotland and Northern Ireland backed Remain. Statements are expected to be made by Sinn Fein and the SNP later today calling for a breakaway from the Union. London backed Remain but the turnout was lower than expected because of bad weather. Below are 11 things you should know about the EU referendum:
1. A referendum is basically a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part, normally giving a “Yes” or “No” answer to a question. Whichever side gets more than half of all votes cast is considered to have won.
2. The European Union – often known as the EU – is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries.

3. The referendum was held in response to growing calls from Conservative MPs and the UK Independence Party (UKIP), who argued that Britain had not had a say since 1975, when it voted to stay in the EU in a referendum.

4. Britain was being held back by the EU, which they said imposes too many rules on business and charges billions of pounds a year in membership fees for little in return.

5. Now that Britain has voted to leave the EU, it will no longer have to contribute billions of pounds a year towards the European Union’s budget.

6. The minimum period after a vote to leave will be two years. During that time Britain will continue to abide by EU treaties and laws, but not take part in any decision-making, as it negotiated a withdrawal agreement and the terms of its relationship with the now 27 nation bloc.

7. The referendum result is not legally binding. Parliament still has to pass the laws that will get Britain out of the 28 nation bloc, starting with the repeal of the 1972 European Communities Act.

8. The EU referendum is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Britain to restore its sovereignty and the coumtry can still rejoin the EU in the future.

9. Britain would no longer have to accept ‘free movement of people’ from Europe.

10. No nation state has ever left the EU.
