World Champions Germany take on Slovakia in the Round of 16 on Sunday evening at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Slovakia beat Germany 3-1 when the two sides met in a friendly match less than a month ago.

Germany qualified for the last 16 as winners of Group C. Although level on 7 points with Poland, a superior goal difference handed them top spot. Germany had more possession (65%) than any other side in the group stage, while Toni Kroos ranked 1st for completed passes (323).

Following their 2-0 win over Ukraine and goalless draw with Poland, Germany closed out the group with a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland. Mario Gomez, starting his first match at the tournament, scored the only goal of the game.

Slovakia qualified for the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed sides. Jan Kozak’s side finished on four points after losing to Wales, beating Russia and holding out for a goalless draw with England in their final group match.

Giving his thoughts on Sunday’s opponents, Kozak said: “It’s an experienced team, which is formed first of all by the players from the Bundesliga, one of the top leagues in the world,” Kozak said. “And they have others from Real Madrid, Arsenal and Juventus. So, we know who we face — a top class opponent.” Slovakia will be looking to be the first team to score a goal against Germany at the tournament.

Winger Robert Mak is an early doubt after picking up a hamstring injury against England. Despite a broken nose, defender Peter Pekarik insists he’ll be OK to start against Germany.

With Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze failing to score in the group stage, 30-year-old Gomez could be in line for another start for Joachim Low’s side. Jerome Boateng was taken off at half time against Northern Ireland with a calf injury and is a doubt for the match.

Benedikt Howedes and Joshua Kimmich will battle it out for the right-back berth. Whoever starts, they’ll have to watch out for Vladimir Weiss. Only Gareth Bale managed to better the Slovakia winger’s 10 completed dribbles in the group stage.

Awaiting the winner in the quarter-finals will be the winner of Italy’s Round of 16 match against Spain.
