Nigeria's Democracy in Danger

ABUJA, Nigeria, June 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Democratic leaders in Nigeria's Senate (the Upper House), including Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, are being unfairly targeted by senior members of the Nigerian Government with politically motivated allegations in order to undermine the power of the Nigerian Senate.

The Nigerian Government Executive is due to lay unfounded charges of forgery and corruption against Nigeria's Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, his Deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the Clerk of the Nigerian Senate, Ben Efeturi and the previous Clerk of the Nigerian National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa.

Senator Sabi Abdullahi, Senator from the Nigerian ruling party (APC) and official spokesman of the Senate said, "It is time for the international community to take note and condemn this undemocratic behaviour by the Nigerian Government. This is a time when the Nigerian people need leadership not petty in-fighting."

Senator Sabi Abdullahi maintains the charges are entirely false and unfounded. "They are nothing more than a politically motivated crusade by the Nigerian Government Executive to remove the democratically elected leadership in the Nigerian Senate. The Nigerian Government Executive is attempting to take democratic power away from the very people the Nigerian Senate represents."

"I call upon the international community to condemn the Nigerian Government Executive's continuing attempts to interfere with the democratic leadership of the Nigerian Senate. Nigeria's 'War on Corruption' is fast-becoming a veil to justify attacks on Nigeria's functioning democracy and this must not be allowed to stand."

Senator Abdullahi added that there is no evidence to justify the criminal charges pursued against the leaders of the Nigerian Senate because the issues were discussed in the Nigerian upper legislative Chambers last year and dismissed. "The Nigerian Government Executive however, is not satisfied, despite the democratic process that followed in the election of the Senate leadership."

Senator Abdullahi urges the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to respect the rule of law and Nigeria's constitutional democracy. "I appeal to all lovers of democracy to condemn in strong terms, this latest assault on our democratic institution. Nigeria's democracy was hard won. It must therefore not be allowed to fail."

Why has the AGF not arraign President Buhari to court for certificate falsification? A country of 150m that is governed by a secondary school dropout.... So sad.

The SP played a fast one on them on 9 June 2015.

The selective amnesia on his corruption by the powers that be immediately vanished and 2 Corruption 5 v 17 no longer applied to him as it does for the 'saints' ie all-a-dem in the ruling party.

Thus began the political trial to get him outta the way by all means.

Buhari hiring 13 SANs instead of providing his WAEC certificate is act of integrity to the APC folks. When others do it's corruption.
Posterity will judge you all

Since Buhari is incapable of governing Nigeria without taking advise from political jobbers as Junaid, it is better for a military coup than live under such bigots.

Buhari has spent a year as the president without any meaningful impacts. just like his first shot at the presidency in 1983, he has been busy intimidating, harassing, witch hunting, and fighting perceived political enemies while rewarding corrupt political cronies. Nepotism and favouritism has become the order of the day.
He has now also assumed the powers of the judiciary and legislative arms of government, keeping people in detention after being granted bail by courts of competent jurisdiction forgetting that "a man is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court". most people are afraid to speak out and ask questions because of fear for the unknown. Our nation is slowly becoming a police state and civil organisations are being crushed. security forces are now agents molestation. Nigerians are suffering and everything about national life and dignity of life is at it's lowest ebb ever.
Nigerians as a people deserve better than this. We are suffering because the government lacks direction and focus. The president have about a year and nine months to turn things around before the 2019 election campaigns sets in. Then we will know if we should continue with the "change" or "changing the change".

All the rubbish about His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari not having secondary school certificate is childish and foolish, because the secondary school he attended confirmed his status that he successfully completed his secondary school education before going on to the Nigerian Defence Academy and then later successfully graduated from the prestigious War College in the US.

People should stop thinking and talking like idiots, because we have many cases of those who never even attended secondary school, but studied at home to sit for the GCE and passed successfully and gained admission into top polytechnics and universities. And there are also cases of those who never went to any polytechnic institute or university, but successfully studied privately and passed ICAN examinations to become Chartered Accountants.

The ridiculous thing about those foolishly insulting President Buhari that he does not have a secondary school certificate is the fact that, among them are secondary school dropouts and those who failed to gain admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy and those who will never in their lives qualify for the US War College and who will never achieve what President Buhari has achieved so far as a military state governor when he was in his early 30s, Federal Commissioner before he was 40 and military Head of State of Nigeria before he was 50 and now becoming the President of Nigeria at 72. Nobody has achieved this record of leadership in the history of Nigeria. Therefore, these idiots and nonentities should just SHUT UP and face their own challenges and failures in life, because they are far behind President Muhammadu Buhari in human accomplishments on earth..

I really don't understand what the President and the executive stands to gain by trying to rubbish the Legislative heads with the staged Kangaroo trial.
The President should focus his energy on solving the many economic problems facing the country, Or (at the least), make desperate effort to register for the forthcoming WAEC exams so as to acquire the SSCE he doesn't have.
The President should not be engrossed in ensuring that Saraki and Ekweremandu
stand trial for what can be adjudged to be an internal Legislative matter. ( Isn't there separation of powers anymore?)
Let the President not forget that he has not presented the minimum qualification to vie for the Presidency, and that is a case of impending forgery on his head.
And When the Legislative turn to investigate his case, impeachment looms.
There is no doubt that, the fire the President is igniting wouldn't be good for our democracy.
