The Buratai Debacle: What Is Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander! by AngryNigerian(m): 5:49am On Jun 29, 2016
In a country where we have simply mainstreamed corruption in public life. We have normalized the materialistic ethic and let it percolate through the curriculum of our socialization! And the real tragedy is that we aren’t honest about the immoral evolution we have wrought. We still affect respect for standard virtues though we prove to be hypocrites when a blatant assault on those values tests our sense of outrage.

Rewind back to few weeks ago...Buratai purged the Nigerian Army of senior officers that were alleged to be guilty of "unprofessional misdemeanors". He justified their premature retirement as an exercise in personnel sanitation. Yes, we cried foulplay; they stood their ground and the rest is history - those gallant officers (with no single evidence on ANY of them) got the dreaded letter! And they all honourably left the service!

Now, here is a man who believes in the virtue of intergrity and honour. I'm not here to defend the sacked officers - not at all! In fact, a bird whispered to me that they might be the source of these heart-chilling story. But if the rumour is true, then I honestly wish it'll often be happenning that way - yes! Let us begin to expose the "skeletons in eachother's cupboard"...& let it start from the top, & permeate even into other services like the Police, Navy, Airforce, Immigration, Prisons, NSCDC, FRSC, etc! Even among the top echelon of the Federal Civil Service!

All I'm (and I believe most of us are) saying is "WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER!" The COAS himself should share in the fate of those he sacked. He should first be retired like the others (or at least be removed)! Then he can clear the air from there. Or is it not what a lot of Nigerians want Saraki to honourably do? He is not a cleaner specimen than those he pronounced "dirty". If anything, he is a more serious threat to the Nigerian Army than all of them put together.

Imagine the manner in which he is using the institution as a shield! Instead of confronting the private scandal as a person, he is subjecting the spokesman of the Nigerian Army to the abuse of posing as a character witness to a criminal suspect. In an attempt to do the double act of simultaneously asserting his ownership of the stolen goods and claiming legitimate possession of same, he is disseminating a propaganda that echoes a false equivalence between a question mark on his character and an effort to undermine the Nigerian Army. He would even venture so far as weaving the war against terror into his mess. He said the anonymous whistleblowers that exposed him were not patriots. They were fifth columnists. Boko Haram agents working to reverse the technical defeat of the death cult…by distracting him!

President Buhari must sack Buratai!

Everything is wrong with permitting a war criminal who amassed outrageous wealth by sacrificing Nigerian lives to continue as head Nigerian Army. His complicity in the escalation of the war and the resultant slaughter of thousands of Nigerians renders him unfit to answer to the title of Chief of Army Staff. Buhari must sack him for the self same reason the general sacked his juniors.

The exact punishment the judge used for others should be meted out to him.

The sententious Buratai should be kicked out in the spirit of the "clean-up" that he preached. The Nigerian Army should not accommodate at the height of its hierarchy a man who has a habit of buying pieces of real estate his means cannot afford! A corrupt army chief is a threat to national security.

As it stands today, the Nigerian Army now has a model, an image of a lodestar of “personal savings” that doesn’t make sense outside the perimeters of corruption. Imagine what an army we would have if the Chief’s example of magical ”personal savings” catches on in all Nigerian barracks! Buratai should be sacked and called to account.

I recall when the "Dubai Property" story went viral - it was a chilling moment to hear how billions of our commonwealth were invested free of interest and tax in Dubai businesses and properties! Now we have one of the 'Dubai Landlords! To retain him as the leader of the Nigerian Army in the face of a scandal that has vitiated his authority is to encourage him to continue to inspire Nigerian soldiers and civilians to mimic his dark art.

Imagine what a country we would have if we all started doing the "Buratai-style” of "personal savings" (of which we know that a lot of us have been doing over the years!) and becoming Dubai landlords! SMH

If Buhari does not probehow Burutai was able to buy houses in Dubai then his anti-corruption fight would be a mere joke, in the eyes of the international communities, @ least, if he leaves office, he should be probe, the world is watching mr Buhari in 3-D.

Nice piece here. It pays to have intelligent opposition that weighs reaction on logic, and not impulse like we have witnessed in the months preceeding 2015 Change.

I'm an advocate of your topic, but then, it had never had roots in our government of today. It has always been war against opposition. I doubt such will have significant impact on their choices, except, by some magic, Buratai becomes opposition.

They will explain it away as usual. The money and the jeeps Buhari allegedly collected as his share from Dasuki was explained away as usual. It is all Buratai's entitlement. It is his saving but others were stolen money. Now you know why we are where we are today in Nigeria.

Purging corruption in the military is commendable, but it must be total and extended to politicians with equal treatment
