We all can remember most things in our life, like our graduation, first job, first kiss, or that time I tried to do a backflip on concrete (Long Story…), But it doesn’t take a scientist to know that most of us cant remember much that happened in our lives from birth to around age 3. So, why cant we remember being born (our birth experience)… follow me on another epic journey.

Where were you last Sunday? You’d probably remember where you were and what you were doing, even if you don’t get all the details right. Scientists call these memories “EPISODAL MEMORIES” ,so why don’t people have episodal memories from their birth, the inability of humans to recall events of the birth is called “Infantile Amnesia”, scientists have come up with a lot of hypothesis to explain this.

Some say the events of child birth are traumatic and sexually graphic so the brain doesn’t store them, others say the brain of a baby is not yet developed to store memories until the baby has basic grasp of language, but this has been refuted as infantile amnesia is also present in mice and they have no basic grasp of language. So this crossover of infantile amnesia among species has disproved the hypothesis of language, this has led scientists to believe that, it’s not that we don’t have early memories, but it reaches a certain stage where we can’t access them.

Scientists and Researchers asked children aged 3 to describe recent events, like a visit to a park, they were able to describe it accurately, the scientists, followed up and at ages 5,6,7, the children could only recall 60% of that event. At ages 8 and 9, the children could only recall 40%. This shows Infantile Amnesia as it progresses.

Another theory scientists have is “NEURO GENESIS” in the “HIPPOCAMPUS ”, the hippocampus is a crucial part of the brain for storing memories, in Alzheimer’s disease, the hippocampus is one of the first place’s to be affected which leads to memory loss. So scientists believe that as rapid NEURO GENESIS (creation of new cells) takes place in the hippocampus in children, with the brain creating new cells you’d use to store memories for the rest of your life as a child, old memories are wiped away.
