watch the tv show taboo on national geographic. what is weird to some is normal to others.

last nights show was about the dead. in southern asia and some areas of europe you rent a grave for 3-5 years then your body is removed and another is added in its place. in the philipeans some people willingly live in graveyards. in the us people pay money to have thier family members autopsied. in buddist countries people volunteer to collect the dead and transport them to the morgues to recieve good karma. to them this is normal while to my husband thought t was very odd. some of it i found normal some i though was odd. it all depends on what your cultures norms are. you can also watch old episodes online. its very intresting

A tribe in new Guinea (Sambian)views homosexual activity and semen ingestion in boys as vital to becoming a real man. It is kinda like a rite of passage

Masculinity

In the Sambian tribe a man is seen as someone who is forceful, strong, and can perform in masculine behaviour.  A manly man can perform painful rituals on himself and he can control his wife as well as his estate.  Achieving such manliness is seen as an individual accomplishment.  A man's only protection against his enemies is in fact his masculinity.

It is believed that even though boys are born and have joysticks, they lack sex traits associated with puberty: a muscular body, pubescent glands and even semen.  The Sambians believe that homosexual activity, as rites will increase a boy's manliness.

The transition starts when the boys are seven to ten years of age and will ensue for ten to fifteen years.  Oral ingestion of semen by the boys is important to the growth of their manhood.  Constant semen ingestion takes place because they believe that semen will only accumulate with what semen is swallowed.

Receiving nosebleeds would punish the boys of the Samian tribe.  Nosebleeds are believed to push maturity.  It also will strengthen their resolve on the battlefield.  You must not be afraid to see your own mates blood and therefore, if the enemy kills their mate, they must therefor kill the enemy via revenge.

Boys are also only allowed to drink water, except on the last day of rituals, all other liquids are restricted.  Only taro and yam (which are male food) are allowed to be eaten, but only in small quantities.  This would make the stomach empty and would help the boys to consume what will eventually make them into a man, semen.

At the first stage of manhood, there are two activities that occur.  Both are essential to manhood and are supernatural.  The first event involves an object called the Kwolyi-Mutnyi.  This object is roughly a foot and a half long by three inches wide.  It is wrapped in red-dyed bark cloth (which is used in healing methods) and is wrapped around the head of the male.  It is believed that this object will give the boy great masculinity.  The second involves an edge-land forest hut called the Mor-Angu.  This hut is believed to attract a spirit familiar.  These spirit familiars will make the boy stronger, smarter and will contribute towards his masculine longevity.

I used to watch Taboo, but my siblings couldn't stand it so I had to opt for another show.

I watched one which was a passage rite into manhood. I think it's one of these Papua Guinea countries. Teenage boys would be cut with blades to make their skin look like crocodiles. Just think about it, over a hundred tribal marks on your body. Come and see how some were crying. The cutters didn't even care. They just forced the boys heads into their thighs. . . ewwww. lipsrsealed . . .

There was also one where young boys had to stick some kind of curved string down their throat, pass the esophagus and down to the stomach, also in Papua Guinea.  grin One old man demonstrated it to the young men with ease. One of the boys resisted doing it, if you see as they slapped him ehh, he had to do it by force.

I have promised myself not to look through this thread again. Arghhh!!!

There are some sick cultures in the world:

Heard in some places, a visitor is allowed to shag his friend's wife

Some sects of some religion believe some spirit can come on you and you start ranting in some strange tongues

Some religions believe they can kill in the name of a god and they'll be rewarded by eternal bliss

Saw this on TV, girls not yet into puberty or just getting into puberty have their breasts pressed with hot iron to prevent them being attractive to prospective philanderers
Re: What's Are The Weirdest Culture In The World? by Nobody: 5:23pm On Sep 05, 2009
Yeah I saw the breast pounding too. They do it with a hot pestle not iron. I think it's in Cameroun.

And then you guy's will say its hard to be a woman. Well all I can say to that tradition is hopefully STD's or AID's doesn't hit their communities anytime soon. Lawd have mercy.

No wonder they pour all their frustrations on women. cheesy The effect of such passage rites is enough to make any person insane. tongue

In some parts of Papua New Guinea (1), an aspiring bride worth her sugar must, as a matter of rudimentary courtesy, sound parental up-bringing, and solid character, have sex with every man in the village as part of their traditional wedding protocol, in order to affirm her dignity and also guarantee her fertility, in strict conformity with their cherished, rich, and ancient culture! Meanwhile, in another part of the same Papua New Guinea, members of the Dani ethnic nationality rarely have sex. By tradition, in order to acquire sufficient respectability, newly wedded couples must wait for as long as 5 years before they copulate.

In Cooks Islands , located in the South Pacific Ocean, older married women have the exclusive statutory and civic duties of routinely introducing, initiating, instructing, grooming, and practicalising the science and art of advanced reproductive dynamics with teenage boys. Their religion cautions them that repeated indulgence in less than three (3) solid "rounds" per 24 hours, ultimately leads to acute schizophrenia.

Eskimos in Northern Canada and Greenland have drastically simplified the process of wedding. Marriages are arranged at birth  Eskimo law demands that marriages can only be deemed official if, and only when, such couples start copulating. At the exact moment of their debut pre-marital sexual experimentation, they are automatically translated to the realm of graciously married husband and wife. No further ceremonies are needed, or may even be tolerated by their strict marital ethics and etiquette. Different strokes for different folks. Different lanes for different brains. Simple!

Voyeuristic East Asian women enjoy homoerotic displays from men
   ewww  undecided

Ancient and medieval writings recorded a large number of instances in which Chinese and Japanese women either spied on, or publicly enjoyed homoerotic performances from men, and also enjoyed men as sexual entertainment in other ways. These stories flies in the face of Western cliches of oppressed Oriental women, whose sexuality is controlled by men.

In modern-day Japan, the main market for gay romance/pornography comic books is heterosexual women
! This phenomenon, known as yaoi, is also popular in the Chinese world and has only recently started catching on in the West relatively. East Asian female sexuality has existed INDEPENDENTLY of pleasing men for thousands of years. Yet this idea is never represented in Western popular media.

Many Westerners have the idea that East Asian women are conditioned to take care of others and put the needs of their men before their own. In American films, sexism and racism combine to create a fantasy world in which yellow women exist to serve the pleasures of white men. Whenever you see a yellow woman on American TV or the big screen, she is almost always the love interest of a white man, there to serve as eye-candy and fodder for erotic fantasies about a mysterious Other. It is a wonder then, that after all this media conditioning, many males of European descent confessed their fantasies about indulging in one man-multiple woman group sex with multiple Asian women? There are many white boys who think only of how Asian women can serve them, but not how *they* can serve Asian women. (Now doesn't that make men of European descent just as oppressive as the East Asian men they stereotype as sexist exploiters of Asian women?)
