Things are hard these days and so many sharp ones are devising methods to continue living in affluence. Fraudsters are evetywhere: the internet and social media; they are on our roads in major cities, schools, banks, market, etc.
Now these criminals have devised a new way that is highly technical. They bug your phones and mailbox sounding friendly and convincing.
You may be aware of a recording of a phone conversation purportedly involving a fraudster trying to convince a bank customer to reveal her account details. This recording is indicative of the increasing sophistication of scammers and the need for people to remain vigilant at all times.
People have been receiving calls from strange numbers that carry foreign phone codes. Numbers such as:
+37560260528
+37127913091
+37178565072
+56322553736
+37052529259
+255901130460
or
numbers that start from:
+543
+375,
+371,
+381,
etc.
One peculiar thing about calls from these numbers is that they hang up almost immediately a call is established.
These numbers are categorized among those that are charged $15 - $30 once a call is established. The callers have fixed machines and softwares that can copy your contact list within seconds. They do not spare your bank or Credit Card details stored/saved in your phone, as they can copy that too !
Every country is has a telephone code with which it is identified. Nigeria has +234 as its code. So, from a code you can know the country from which the call is coming. E.g.,
+375 is from Belarus
+371 code for Lativa,
+381 code for Serbia
+563 code for Valparaiso
+370 code for Vilnius
+255 code for Tanzania, etc.
Research has shown that most of these calls are coming from ISIS. They are using the phones to lure innocent people to their fold as well using them to steal money from people's bank account.
So, whenever you receive such strange calls, don't answer or Call back. Should you pick such calls unknowingly, make sure you do not disclose personal information.
Again, IF SOME ONE ASKs YOU TO DIAL any of the following codes, please do not do so:
#09
or
#90.
The codes are among the Newly discovered Tricks that Terrorists normally use to Frame Innocent People up...!
There is a fraud company using a device that once you press:
#90
or
#09,
they can access your SIM card and make calls at your own expense as well as using your phone number to do evil. This will implicate you seriously.
These are some important points to note:
1.     A call from or email from your Bank will address you by your full name (as captured in your account opening documents).
2.     Always access your bank's Online portal only via their website and not through any other link (especially those sent via email).
3.     Do not open suspicious texts, popup windows or emails.
4.     Giving away one-time PINs (OTP) and token information is very risky and can be likened to giving your house keys, the key to your safe or even your Debit card and the PIN number to total strangers.  You simply wouldn’t do these things and don’t do the same with your tokens and OTPs.
5.     Your Bank has a way of protecting its customers. One of them is by sending OTPs only to their registered phone numbers and sends emails whenever an account is logged into from a device.  Your Bank's Mobile app cannot be registered on more than one device at the same time.
6.  Using your Bank's Mobile App is by far the safest way to transact, with less inherent risk than using online services on shared computers, cards at merchants you don’t know and certainly lower than the risk of  having your signature forged on a cheque.
7.    These Mobile apps have Fraud Management software that runs complex scanning of customer transactions to pick up on any suspicious trends and eliminate fraud at the source.
8.     If you are ever in doubt over the authenticity of a call or email claiming to be from your Bank, hang up the call immediately and seek assistance from your bank's customer care centre .
