Edo 2016: Iduoriyekemwen picks Okonofua, ex-PDP National Woman Leader as running mate

By Simon Ebegbulem

MR Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, who emerged as the candidate in the primaries conducted by the Modu Sheriff faction of the PDP, has picked the former National Woman Leader of the PDP, Herbetta Okonofua, as his running mate for the election.

Okonofua is from the Central senatorial district of the state, the area where the mainstream candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, also picked his running mate from.

Speaking yesterday, Iduoriyekemwen said, “it was our promise to ensure women empowerment, and if you look at Herbatta, she has always been a PDP leader, she has held several positions both in the state and the Federal, and I am glad she will represent the women folk in our government.”

On the recent court ruling that sacked Modu Sheriff as National Chairman of the party, he said the developments were of little effect as he said that Sheriff had earlier gotten favourable court rulings.

Despite Monday’s Port-Harcourt court ruling stripping him of his powers as national chairman of the PDP and which recognised the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led panel as the authentic leadership of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff yesterday unveiled Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen as the candidate for the governorship contest.

In a ceremony at his Gana Street office, Tuesday evening, Senator Sheriff said the Independent National Electoral Commission was obliged to accept his candidate when he formally presents him to the electoral body.

Senator Sheriff said he would be relying on last week’s judgment by Justice Okon Abang of Federal High Court in Abuja to present.

“It is clear that from Abuja High Court that INEC is obliged to accept the candidate we are to present.

“You know ideally, most of our officials have travelled for Sallah. We need to do this because the first working day we are going to submit our candidate’s form to INEC.

“I have to stay behind to do some of the things so as to ensure that the forms are submitted after the Sallah break,” Sheriff stated.

Why are politicians so obdurate and unneccessarilly stupid? Why is this man wasting his time and money? Isn't it obvious that Modu sherif and everything that has to do with him is nothing but a fairytale?
