Former Super Eagles defender, Yisa Sofoluwe, has blamed the three defenders who were on duty during the last Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Tunisia for allowing the visitors to run away with a point when the chips were down in Abuja.

The ex-player, popularly called Defence Minister said he was disappointed the way Taiye Taiwo, Joseph Yobo and Dele Adeleye played throughout the keenly contested duel.

He said the players were not totally committed to the task of qualifying Nigeria to the South Africa 2010 mundial. According to him, the defenders played as if nothing was at stake.

Sofoluwe said as a retired player, he could still play better than the three defenders who allowed Tunisians to level up immediately Nigeria were at the advatange of winning the match.
"It’s unfortunate we are still struggling to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. The players messed up Nigeria’s chances of scalling over Tunisia’s hurdles. A victory would have changed everything but it’s a pity we didn’t learn from our mistakes. For the fact that we knew how the Tunisians play, still, we played into their hands. With the way things are going, I don’t think we can make it in that group. It would take miracle to see Nigeria qualifying, but like they always say, nothing is impossible with God but we also need to do out home work properly. We need to play the remaining matches with Mozambique and Kenya,” he said.

He said Taiye Taiwo contributed to Nigeria’s poor showing against Tunisia by going upfront without telling other players to block his position. He said the two equalising goals were scored from the Olympique Marseille’s player angle.

Tunisians coach instructed his boys to make use of Taiwo’s position because they have watched him moving to the front and he’s not always fast enough to cover up his lapses, and the Tunsians had enough pace to move ahead of him. It’s sad we had no plan to beat Tunisia,” he said.
