Before Pokemon Go phenomenon and PSPs and other mobile Android games, there were Sega, Nintendo and Nitendo64 among other popular game consoles from back in the day. Here’s a look at the top five games that made these game consoles so unforgettable to the Nigerian gaming community.

Super Mario
Created by Shigero Miyamoto for the Japanese company Nintendo is perhaps the most popular video game ever designed by human hands. Since its first release in September 1985, over 310million copies of the game has been sold since then. The Super Mario games follow Mario's adventures in the fictional Mushroom Kingdom, usually with Mario as the player character. He is usually joined by his brother, Luigi, and occasionally by other members of the Mario cast. The games have simple plots, typically with Mario rescuing the kidnapped Princess Peach from the primary antagonist, Bowser.

Mortal Kombat
This one doesn’t need much introduction, from Mortal Kombat on Sega, to Mortal KombatII on Nintendo, to Mortal Kombat Trilogy on Nintendo64 every game in the Mortal Kombat series was a huge commercial success. The games were styled in a 2D fighting fashion. Terms such as “Flawless Victory,” “fatality” and “Finish Him/her” will always be remembered by fans of these games. Popular characters from these games include the likes of Sub-Zero, Smoke, kabal and the famous black Noob Saibot among others.

Winning Eleven 4, Ps1
It was released in 1999, and the best description for this game is ‘it was the finest soccer game ever made.’ It was developed by Konami Entertainment and was released on PlayStation1 console. This game deserved its commercial success because its gameplay was simple, it was easy to maneuver players and easy to score freekicks. If you ever lay your hands on this treasure again, the team to use is European All-stars. Use the 4-3-3 formation with Schevhenko on the right, Owen on the left and Bierhof in the middle.

Grand Theft Auto
This was another game series that was popular in Nigeria. Each game in this series allows players to take on the role of a criminal in the big city, typically an individual who plans to rise through the ranks of organized crime through the course of the game. The player is given various missions by kingpins and major idols in the city underworld which must be completed to progress through the storyline. Assassinations and other violent crimes are featured regularly. Occasionally taxi driving, firefighting, street racing, bus driving, or learning to fly helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are also involved in the game. The first game in the series of this classic was released in 1997 but there is a latest version released in March this year.

God of War
It is an action-adventure video game that was released in 2005 for PlayStation 2. Loosely based on Greek mythology, it is set in ancient Greece with vengeance as its central motif. The player controls the protagonist Kratos, a Spartan warrior who serves the Olympian Gods. The goddess Athena tasks Kratos with killing Ares, the God of War, who tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and daughter. As Ares besieges Athens out of hatred for Athena, Kratos embarks on a quest to find the one object capable of stopping the god: the legendary Pandora's Box. God of War sold more than 4.6 million copies worldwide, making it the eleventh best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time.
