Court Order On Reversal Of Electricity Tariff May Lead To Loss Of 10,000 Jobs by falconey(m): 12:07am On Jul 19, 2016
Enforcement of the reversal on electricity tariff as ordered by a Lagos High Court may lead to over 10,000 job loss, Mr Oladele Amoda, Chief Executive Officer, Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EKEDP) said. Amoda who stated this at the company’s function in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development, USAID in Lagos said that electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, have warned that if the court order, which directed them to revert to old tariff is obeyed, it will affect the power sector negatively.
He said, “Over 10,000 workers may be sacked while investors will not just shy away from investing in the sector, international donors will also be discouraged from participating in the sector.

“We have appealed the court order for stay of execution. Meanwhile, that singular act will affect the power sector negatively. Investors will be discouraged from further investment in the sector; donor agencies may have a rethink.

“The biggest one is that it may lead to job loss. More than 10,000 workers may lose their job if that judgment stands. Companies cannot continue to run a business at a loss. If we are not making profit, at least we try to cover our cost.
“Another thing is that if we go to status quo as contained in the judgment, we will reintroduce fixed charges. Right now, the increase in tariff doesn’t cover our cost entirely.

Many things have to be done by reinforcing our network which is dilapidated. With this judgment, banks may not offer us credit because they will realise we may not recover our cost,’ he said.
Amoda also said that Eko DISCO has disconnected all military formations within its network, adding that over N6 billion is been owed by the formations to date.

He said that about N18 billion is been owed by various electricity customers within the network which posed serious setback to their operations.
According to him, the debts owed all the eleven distribution companies by the Federal and State Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as the various military formations across the country has risen to N90 billion.

Even with the hundreds of thousand under the employ of defunct NEPA, the cost was not this high neither is there any improved power system.

The Discos, should shut up nd quickly revert Asap, common prepaid meter una no fit provide, inefficient extortionist..

So the judgement is yet to be enforced. Or do we need to set up another committee for it? We know that the bills must be increased but it has to be done by the books or else, it's an illegality. Or are they hiding something they don't want us to know about?

So, where do Nigerians think that the DISCOS are going to get money to imporve things.?

Privatization means privatization.

Sorry.....but we are never going to have light if we think we are too poor to pay for it.

We our own enemies. We never allow common sense to prevail.

Nobody wants to run a business at a loss. A smart entrepreneur will always look for ways to reduce his/her operating costs, one of the ways is to reduce staff expenses. We should blame not the government alone. Nigerians should be ready to pay for quality service while the Discos should desist from making citizens pay for services that were not rendered.

Eventhough the way the DISCO's run their operation is nothing to write home about, what this man is saying is the truth.

The tariff we pay for electricity is one of the cheapest in the world and cheaper if we compare to how much we spend on diesel and petrol to power generators which is one of the highest in the world.

Nigerians don't have a problem paying high tariff but shouldn't have to pay for electricity they don't use. The DISCO's should start rolling out prepaid meter! That's the way to go!

Guess who signed the privatization edict, and enshrined the price increase, among other things, into law....so that APC could not reverse it without big losses to the economy.

It was your friend GEJ.

Re: Court Order On Reversal Of Electricity Tariff May Lead To Loss Of 10,000 Jobs by Nobody: 10:57am On Jul 19, 2016
The sad thing about privatisation is that most Nigerians do not realise that privatisaiton means you are going to pay more for electricity.

We are not going to have light until we learn to pay for it.

We paid high tarriff for GSM....back when service was so poor we were paying N5000 for SIM.

We grumbled, but at the end of the day, things improved ...because the GSM companies had the money to invest in facilities from the excess mone we paid. And prices came down.

If we continue to prevent the power companies from doing the needful about the power sector...if we continue to prevent them from raisng the fees as they see fit, we would drive away more investors, and there would be more job losses. Which we do not need in these hard times.

And if you want an end to this, we have to take over the DISCOS again, which means heavy financial losses.

Nigeria needs trillions of naira to get up to 24 hours of light for everyone. And sadly, we do not have the money. That is why GEJ privatized power. And that is why APC won't reverse the decision

Call me names....but let's get real.

You're one of the reasons I feel there is no hope anymore for Nigeria, a pathetic, chronic and irredeemable dullard calling another dullard.

Tell me, if you are not a DULLARD, you would know it was your hero, the Looter-in-Chief that supervised the so called privatisation by selling to cronies like Tony Elumelu, Barth Nnaji, Ayeni, Abdul Salam Abubakar who don't have the financial and managerial wherewithal to drive the power sector. GEJ shunned the German, Canadian and American power firms and here you are spewing putrid comments.

Be smart and stop being a dullard.

Even then, blaming Buhari for the price increase is wrong.

But still.....the fact is, we have to pay more for power if we want to see 24/7 supply, just as we had to pay heavily for GSM...back when we got useless service...for things to get better.

Unless....you people want government to take over the sector again.

And even with the price increase...most Nigerians do not even pay their bills. (And DISCOS too mess up by not giving us prepaid meters).

OK.....let's go back to government running things, and paying low prices for power.

See if a child will grow when you feed him with 300 calories a day.

We need $1BILLION for power annually. Where are we going to get the money. ?

Unfortunately, it is from our pockets.

It is not something i like., but it is the cold truth.
