1. Using your phone camera to auto-detect a hidden camera lens

Whenever you enter into the room, turn off the lights, and close the curtains, open your phone camera, do not turn the flash light on. Then move around the room with your cell phone. When a red or green dot is detected, that means that a hidden web camera is installed in that room. If no red/ green spot or dots is spoted, then the room may be safe.

2. Using your cell phone to pick up an electromagnetic field
This is done by placing a call on your cell phone, then wave the device around where you think there might be a camera or microphone. If you can hear a clicking noise on the call, it means your phone might be interfering with an electromagnetic field. This is a simple application of science.

We should turn off the light, so that the security people who are monitoring the camera will see us turning off the lights as if we're about to steal something.

This only works for infrared and night vision capable cameras and not the common indoor camera.
Its the same reason you can use your phone camera to check if your infra red remote control is working
