Freezing Out the Gods in Iceland
If you want a peek at the soul of a culture, look at their legends the stories they tell about themselves. For Iceland, that means the Sagas of Icelanders. The first Sagas were written in the 13th century, at the tail end of a period wracked by violence and political uncertainty you may be sensing a pattern here and describe life in Iceland just after the Norse explorers settled it. Hrafnkell’s Saga tells of a warrior chief, Hrafnkell, who worships Freyr, the Norse god of lovely things such as wealth, sunshine, and sex. Hrafnkell gives Freyr his best offerings and constant devotion, even building a grand temple to the god. Despite all this devotion, Hrafnkell is attacked by an enemy, his temple burned, and he and his people enslaved.
It is folly to believe in gods,” he says, vowing never to perform another sacrifice. Stories of lost faith in hard times are easy to come by,and you can usually count on the hero to experience a sudden epiphany that leads him back to the fold before the closing credits. But Hrafnkell’s Saga takes an unexpected turn: He escapes slavery, spares the life of his captor in exchange for freedom, and lives his life in peace and contentment without gods. The most famous contributor to the Icelandic Sagas was the wonderfully named Snorri Sturleson. In addition to leading the nation’s parliament and writing history, Snorri like Euhemerus in wasa mythographer, a gatherer of myths and beliefs. And interestingly,Snorri came to precisely the same conclusion as Euhemerus about the origin of god belief: Human warrior chiefs and kings were venerated in life, then venerated in death, then gradually became venerated as gods. The more contact a person has with human mythmaking, the more he or she seems to see the man behind the curtain.

The spirit of Hrafnkell in Iceland today
It’s no surprise that Hrafnkell remains among the most beloved and widely read of the Sagas of Icelanders among Icelanders today. Though most are nominally Lutheran, fully 60 percent of Icelandic respondents in a 2011 poll said religion is unimportant in their daily lives, making Iceland one of the least religious countries on Earth.

Did you live in Iceland to ascertain that no one there goes to church ? Icelanders are very religious people with solid roots in paganism . There is also a new religion in Iceland called Zuism .

Atheism has no place in Iceland , stop spewing trash in public forum .

Iceland seems to be on its way to becoming an even more secular nation, according to a new poll. Less than half of Icelanders claim they are religious and more than 40% of young Icelanders identify as atheist. Remarkably the poll failed to find young Icelanders who accept the creation story of the Bible. 93.9% of Icelanders younger than 25 believed the world was created in the big bang, 6.1% either had no opinion or thought it had come into existence through some other means and 0.0% believed it had been created by God.

The poll found an even more dramatic difference between different generations when it probed how people believed the world had been created. Of those younger than 25 93.9% said the world had been created in the big bang and 0.0% believed God had created the world. 77.7% of those between 25 and 44 years old believed the world had been created in the big bang and 10.1% believed God had created the world. In all but the oldest age category a majority accepted the big-bang theory. Only 46.1% of those older than 55 believed in the big bang, and nearly a fourth, 24.5% believed God had created the world.

The poll also found a growing percentage of Icelanders support the full separation of church and state. Out of those who expressed an opinion on the subject 72% supported the full separation of church and state and 28% oppose the separation of church and state. Currently the Icelandic constitution stipulates that the state church of Iceland is the Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran Church.

This guy stop posting false information on Nairaland . This is an online poll or survey carried out . In 2012 , a similar online poll 57 percent say they were religious , 31 percent say they were irreligious and 10 percent say they were atheist . Only 852 people took part in it . grin .The point is that these stats you mentioned above is from an online poll and the results extrapolated .

I also told you that a new religion called Zuism is growing in Iceland , quite strangely though .

The pie chart I posted is the official religious affiliation of Icelanders . The table below is another current (2016) official representation of the religious affiliation of Icelanders .

For the mathematically challenged, remember a majority is over 50%. According to Iceland itself, about 80% belong to the Lutheran State Church, 5% belong to other Christian churches, and another 5% practice ásatrú, the traditional Norse religion. However, this is a bit misleading, as much of the population are RINOs (religious in name only!), and don’t regularly attend the church that they were born members to.

I dont regularly go to church too . It does not make an atheist . There are so many Nigerians that don't go to church too , it does not make them atheists .

Stop posting false information on Nairaland. I gave you the official statistics , stop making false claims that they don't go to church . You have never lived there before to make that claim .

There is no place for atheism in Iceland , only picayune details or left overs out of the whole of Iceland show there are few atheists possibly not up to 500 people .

Elohim, as a theist myself l'm not saying you guys lack morals, atheists of course are humans and like every other human can be very moral people. The argument on morality does not question the atheists' ability to be moral, but the basis for this morality. The answers from atheists' are usually an attack on the Christian Bible, and the commands of Yahweh in the old testament, even though the argument is based on having God's nature as the objective basis for this morality, ie if there's a God whose nature is Love, then one must love at all times, hence it is always morally right to love, note that this has nothing to do with the command of this God, which means if he doesn't command it, love is still the ultimate, love is objective. Atheists can even love more than Christians, but they remove this objectivity and fail to replace it with something tangible in their worldview.

Irrelevant to me, when reading the Bible how many times did you see the word religion? In fact how many times did it argue on what religion is right? The bible to me is more about your spiritual growth in Christ than your mental beliefs just that sometimes the right belief speeds up this growth. Hence it is more reasonable to accept christ.
But if Islam is the right religion, Allah should not blame me, l just don't see it. If l did, then l would accept Islam. Why would l miss such a party in heaven with so many virgins? But on a more serious note Elohim, l preach Christ not religions of men.

In North Korea Their President Is Their GOD So Who Say They Don't Believe In God??

Grandfather Kim Il Sung became President of North Korea in 1948 after decades of Japanese occupation in Korea

In 1950 he invaded the south causing America then China to get involved, the peninsular was ravaged by war. It ended with an essential status quo with Kim still in control of the North

The devastation of North Korea allowed Kim to build up a totalitarian state based on Marxist-Leninist ideals

He was able to put into place an especially harsh dictatorship where he was the figurehead in a cult of personality. Supernatural powers were assigned to him

All religions and deviant ideologies were banned and even North Korea's original philosophy of Marxism-Leninism was abandoned in favour of Kim's own brand of thought: 'Juche'

It seemed that Kim Il Sung was the only god left. When he died in 1994, his son Kim Jong Il was considered the most suitable successor. The god like status was passed down to him

When Kim Jong Il died in 2011 his son Kim Jong Un became leader, today he maintains the kingdom his grandfather founded

Luke wrote the book of Luke and Acts, Mark may have written his gospel though not yet an established fact, scholars still doubt the authorship of Matthew and john the apostle. I fail to see what all of these have to do with anything though. You may have to open a separate thread for these, so as not to derail your thread where the debate is hot between Iceland and North Korea, Lol.
