Responsive Emails - To Implement Or Not To Implement by yawatide(f): 6:39pm On Jul 27, 2016 |
I hope and trust we are all using responsive web design (RWD) for our web projects. Given that everything is going mobile these days (and smart TV as well), it only makes sense that we take the RWD route. How about our HTML emails? Are we still using the standard templates or are we also RWD in this regard? Regardless of your approach, let's discuss the pros and the cons and what approach you prefer/implement... |

yawatide... I presumed you were going to share your pros and cons... But it seems you are searching for pointers from others.. I think you should elaborate on the matter.... What do you mean by HTML emails? although am doing some research on it right now... |
Re: Responsive Emails - To Implement Or Not To Implement by yawatide(f): 6:45pm On Jul 28, 2016 |
@newsphase Not to brag or boast but I am well versed in the matter. If you saw my very first post (after years of absence), I said I intend to reinvigorate the board, relative to posts where we can all learn something, as opposed to advertisements (basically, spam). That's how it used to be 10 years or so ago. At any rate, I posted this to get others points of view on the topic. In the end, we all learn. IMHO, if I were to list mine, then it might be the end of the thread as I might end up listing everything that's out there. On the contrary, when others post, as is my style, I will chime in to either add and/or dispute. Again, in the end, we all learn a thing or two. As to what I mean by HTML emails, I mean the emails you send out that have images, formatted text, etc. This is as opposed to emails that are strictly text. HTML emails add a level of interactivity and is more pleasant to the eye, IMHO. Oya, let's hear what you have to say after you've done your research. 8 Likes 1 Share |

yawatide: I believe it could be quite resourceful to implement this sort of email marketing system.... From my research, I assumed that html mails were just the ones my bank sends to me... (in my gmail)... All those mails normally leave my in awe.... But I have to admit... I am quite ignorant of such...... 3 Likes |

Now on the topic, creating a responsive email is good but the major set back is on most email settings on mobile devices and p.cs , images can't be viewed esp. If the mail is from a contact that's not in your contact list. At the end of the day , you may not see the true lovely design of the responsive e mail. But with that said some firms have some lovely responsive emails and they have images Google , Facebook to list a few . But for me I'd go for a less heavy responsive email with just one or two images |

For fear of messing it all up on some devices/browsers/email clients (some people never upgrade or trust new technologies), I design and set it as non-responsive. I use tables with a fixed with of 600px. Some other times, I use Foundation email to implement the rwd. It all depends on the campaign, content and target audience. |

Responsive HTML emails are actually the standard these days. The trend is to design for mobile first as most people view their emails on their mobile phone especially in our market where 83% access the Internet from mobile. You will need to test really well though as different email clients interpret the codes in different ways and Gmail just dumps your email under the "Promotions" tab which no one really cares to open. The open rate is also generally higher for responsive emails as opposed to the standard HTML emails. The only thing that annoys me though is why we have to use tables for layout in HTML emails. If you use Divs and style it, email clients generally strip off your CSS, even when you use inline CSS sometimes. 1 Like |

Sent a few responsive emails in the past. My observation tho! 1. Just like every other responsive designs, the end-user's device will load all of the embedded css classes and exceptions for both the large screen, medium screen and small screen. eg. ur @media blablabla. 2. Not all devices recognize and load your responsive design for their emails. Some devices are configured to automatically convert your html responsive mail to plain text. This is not a problem with responsive email since non-responsive will exhibit same behaviour. 3. Sent a few responsive emails in the past, the feeling is amazing. yawatide: |

How many Nigerians read their emails? Do not waste your time trying to beautify the email with HTML because gmail and other services even block the images from showing unless the user click on show image. So it is not worth it. |
Re: Responsive Emails - To Implement Or Not To Implement by daywalker02: 8:43am On Aug 08, 2016 |
if you have a double opt-in list all mailers will show your images by default, but the issues is that must Nigerian uses opera mini for browsing on their mobile and opera mini doesnot display html email, it just convert almost everything to hyperlinks. And its expensive if you have a larger list |

I've been using Mailchimp for more than 3 years and I believe it's a perfect example of responsive email. My experience with mailchimp is awesome as it allows you to use pre-built templates, design your own template using the inbuilt css editor or even install a custom template. Recently, they added support to view your mails in different screens for compatibility, and if you want to view how your mails appear in different mail clients, you can pay for subscription, but essentially it's free (though with certain limits) I sometimes wonder why Gmail, yahoo etc were not designed to work like mailchimp. 1 Like |
