Yar'adua travels to Saudi Arabia to "open a new University" while Nigerian universities are closed

It is official: Yar'Adua will be back to his favourite sick bed in Jeddah tomorrow. But his office said with a straight face in Abuja today his appearance in Saudi Arabia will be a "working visit."
The official statement also claimed that during the "visit," which will conclude on Saturday (wink, wink), Yar'Adua will participate in the opening of the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and meet with the Nigerian community in Saudi Arabia.

Saharareporters broke the story about Yar’Adua’s new trip to Saudi Arabia last Friday, noting that his handlers were struggling to fashion out a passable excuse for the trip, in view of the fact that he was in the same country only weeks ago.

The ruse of an official visit is unlikely to appease Nigerians who know that Yar'Adua is usually rushed there when his finicky health takes another dip. Saharareporters can authoritatively reveal that Yar’Adua’s trip this week is again medical, and nothing else. The so-called invitation by the King of Saudi Arabia to open a university is an afterthought designed to fool an exasperated and cynical Nigerian public.

A close confidant of Yar’Adua told Sahararporters in New York that the idea of going to Saudi Arabia to open a university when Nigerians universities are under lock and key from a protracted lecturers strike is the "most stupid" alibi any leader can give for leaving Nigeria for Saudi Arabia. He also drew attention to the fact that New York is filling up with world leaders gathering for intense multilateral diplomatic work over the next two week in the interest of their nations and the world.

"That Yar'Adua is now trying to hoodwink Nigerians before the entire world is the biggest insult of all," he said.
