BRAIN REFRESHING is a unique and spectacular online quiz basically on Pure Mathematics and Basic Further Mathematics targeted at helping both the students and all interested people acquire sound knowledge in Mathematics and also being able to apply such knowledge in day-to-day activities.

This forum is NOT only meant for Mathematics lovers, it is also for those who are willing to learn. The weekly quiz will be in modules and test series, with each test having 4 questions. Quiz questions will be posted at the beginning of a week while solutions & answers will be posted at the end of the week. YOU ARE HIGHLY WELCOME ON BOARD.

MODULE 1 TEST 1

(1) If 5 is added to twice a number, the result is 17. Find the number.

(2) What is the name given to a set containing only one element or member?

(3) There were 4 white doves on a fence. Four pigeons later joined the bevy. Two kinds of birds flew away some seconds after. A boy named Jack cast a stone at the birds. How many white doves remained on the fence?

(4) If 4 men can dig a portion of land for 14 days, how long will it take 7 men to complete the same task?

NOTE: All answers should be posted before or on Saturday 13th August, 2016.

Incentive will be given to the first TWO participants who give correct answers to the questions.

BEST OF LUCK!!!

SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERS TO THE LAST QUIZ (MODULE 1 TEST 1)

(1) Let the number be x.
If 5 is added to twice the number, the result is 17.
That is,
2x + 5 = 17
Collect like terms
2x = 17 - 5
2x = 12
x = 12/2
x = 6
Hence, the number is 6.

(2) Such a set is called SINGLETON.

(3) The answer is 0.
[No bird would remain on the fence]

(4) If 4 men can dig for 14 days,
7 men will dig for [(4 x 14) / 7] days = 4 x 2 = 8 days
Hence, it will take 8 days for 7 men to complete the same task.

THAT'S JUST IT!!! WISHING YOU THE VERY BEST NEXT TIME.

MODULE 1 TEST 2

(1) Given f(x) = (x - 1) / (x^2 - 2x - 3). If f(x) = 0, find x.

(2) What is the probability of getting a 2 in a single throw of a dice?

(3) What type of set is the set P below?
P = {2, 3, 5, 8, 11, .............}

(4) When 9 is added to a particular number and then divided by 2, the result is 5 times the number. Find the number.

NOTE: All answers should be posted before or on Saturday 20th August, 2016.

BEST OF LUCK!!!

SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERS TO THE LAST QUIZ (MODULE 1 TEST 2)
(1( Given
f(x) = (x - 1) / (x^2 - 2x - 3)
If f(x) = 0, then
0 = (x - 1) / (x^2 - 2x - 3)
Cross multiplying gives
x - 1 = 0
x = 1

(2) A dice has 6 faces with numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
In a single throw, 2 can be obtained once.
Hence, the probability of getting a 2 is
Pr(2) = 1/6

(3) Set P is an infinite set. [That is, one with endless number of elements]

(4) Let the particular number be y.
Going by the question, we shall mathematically obtain
(y + 9) / 2 = 5y
Multiply both sides by 2, we obtain
y + 9 = 2 x 5y
y + 9 = 10y
Collect like terms
y - 10y = -9
-9y = -9
Divide both sides by -9
y = 1
Hence, the particular number is 1.

THAT'S JUST IT!!! WISHING YOU THE VERY BEST NEXT TIME.

MODULE 1 TEST 3

(1) How many edges and vertices has a cube?

(2) What is the place value of 4 in 258.046?

(3) Find the number whose logarithm to base 10 is 1.5682.

(4) When twice a certain number is subtracted from 45, the result is 21. What is that number?

NOTE: All answers should be posted before or on Saturday 27th August, 2016.

BEST OF LUCK!!!

SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERS TO THE LAST QUIZ (MODULE 1 TEST 3)

(1) A cube has 12 edges and 8 vertices.

(2) The place value of 4 in 258.046 is 4 hundredth.

(3) Using Four-Figure Tables and flipping to Antilogarithm of Numbers.
The number whose logarithm is 1.5682 is found to be 37.

(4) Let the certain number be m.
From the statement, it is mathematically expressed:
45 - 2m = 21
Collect like terms
45 - 21 = 2m
24 = 2m
Divide both sides by 2, we have
m = 12
Hence, 12 is that number.

THAT'S JUST IT!!! WISHING YOU THE VERY BEST NEXT TIME.

(1). Mantissa
.

(2). 3^(x-3) = 9^2x
3^(x-3) = 3^2(2x)
3^(x-3) = 3^4x
since base is equal equate the power
x-3=4x
4x-x=-3
3x=-3
divide both side by 3(coefficient of x)
3x/3 = -3/3
x= -1
.

(3) log base10(2x+4) - log base10(3x-1)=1
from logarithim rule 2
log base a (M/N)= log base a M -log base a N
.
hence
log base10 (2x+4/ 3x-1) = log base10 10
2x+4 / 3x-1 =10
cross multiply
2x+4= 10(3x-1)
2x+4=30x-10
30x-2x=4+10
28x=14
divide both side by 28(coefficient of x)
28x/28= 14/28
x =1/2 or 0.5
.

(4). Un=a+(n-1)d
a=first term n= number of term d=common difference
for the third term n=3
U3=a+(3-1)d=16
a+2d=16 -------eq(1)
for the sixth term n=6
U6=a+(6-1)d=34
a+5d=34---------eq(2)
solving (1) and (2) simultaneously using elimination method
a+2d=16-----------eq(1)
a+5d=34-----------eq(2)
________ ___
-3d= -18
divide both side by -3(coefficient d d)
_ -3d/-3=-18/-3
common difference d=6

COMMENTS ON THE LAST QUIZ (MODULE 1 TEST 5)

The following participants - PatEinstEin, Olutayojr, Ayox1 and Kolad got 100% respectively in the last quiz while Iyoha got 75%. Thus, award/incentive will be given to PatEinstEin, Olutayojr, Ayox1 and Kolad.

That said, only Kolad showed proper working steps on how he arrived at the answers to the quiz questions. The rest of you did not.

NOTE:
It is very necessary to show the working steps on how you arrive at the answer(s) to each of the quiz questions. though these must be short and concise.

From my own judgement, the Overall Winner Of The Quiz (Module 1 Test 5) is conferred to Kolad. I hope you all know why.

@PatEinstEin, Olutayojr, Ayox1 and Kolad: Kindly send me via e-mail the type of network you use (GLO/MTN/ETISALAT/AIRTEL).

Wishing you all a glorious, prosperous new year in advance.
