3 MAJOR SOURCES OF INCOME FOR THE AVERAGE NIGERIAN YOUTH
Even in a community where jobs are scarce and government’s action to reduce unemployment is very poor, the general economic environment is not too favourable for businesses, while solutions to unemployment issues are found implemented on the pages of newspapers, Nigerian youths have found other ways to stay engaged. They include:
1. SPORTS BET: Sounds funny right! Well, as sad as it seems, sports bet has now become one major source of income to some youths. They are different sport betting options which include Bet9ja, Nairabet, Wasere, Surebet 247, 9jaPredict and a host of others. With all this available options, people now turn to and solely depend on chance/probability to make money. While sports bet are advertised as a game, people now go there as an alternative investment option.
2. POLITICS: Today, you see different political support/solidarity groups with different slogans all campaigning for “stomach infrastructure” as this source of income is commonly called. In fact, this business line has seen the incorporation of cultism and area boys into its business chain. The key is:
“Belong” to a political party, solidarity groups, or some other “brotherhood”.
Endorse someone from any of the two main political parties.
Go on courtesy calls.
Serve as community/grassroots supporter, politician or “errand boy”.
Then, be sure the cash will start flowing. You can even get paid for wearing a party uniform or filling seats during conventions and party campaigns.
3. CHURCH: People run to churches to seek spiritual help and see their spiritual leaders as solutions to their problems. That opens an opportunity for people to exploit that avenue to make money. Church business happens to be the most lucrative of all three sources of income. The code is; Start a church or prayer house, go for members, do assignments and prophesy, watch what other churches are doing and do same or improvise, and don’t forget to teach on tithe, offerings and seeds.
The truth is almost everything in live has been adulterated and abused (Abuse – from the word Abnormal Use) and the church is no exception. Even the Bible teaches us to beware of wolves in sheep clothing.
These 3 sources of income happen to work, though not for all. While many have become rich through this medium, many too have been plagued: Playing church has its consequences. Gambling has its own consequences. Stomach infrastructure also has its own consequences and truly if you look at Nigeria today, you will see the consequences of stomach politics.
