Plantain is a type of fruit related to the banana. It looks similar to banana, with a thick green skin covering a pale, firm interior. Caribbean and African cuisines use plantains, often in a cooked or fried form. Plantains contain several vitamins and minerals that your body needs.

Plantain is rich in vitamins most especially Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and carotene and its low fat content makes it a delight for people suffering from cholesterol related ailments. Many diseases such as obesity, diabetics, gallstone, coronary heart and colon cancer have been linked to the consumption of refined and fibre depleted diets. Plantain has been listed as one of the major high fibre rich foods.
This implies that consumption of plantain meals will bring succor to those suffering from the diseases enumerated above. Also, plantain is relatively rich in protein compared to other fruits. Hence, it could be used in formulating protein supplement diets for both children and the adults.
The demand for plantain within the country is high, with supply struggling to meet demand. This has hampered the status of this crop as foreign exchange earnings. It remains an important staple food, as well as the raw material for many products. It also serves as a source of revenue for many people and as raw material for industries producing value added products in many parts of Nigeria. Plantain occupies a strategic role in rapid food production, being a perennial crop with a short gestation period.

Growing Plantain does not require much effort but to achieve high yields requires skills, dedication, and proper planting methods.

Plantain need rich, moisture and well-drained soil with 40% clay, 75% silt, 85% loam. Plantain prefers a more acidic soil with pH between 6-7.5. Low pH soil makes Plantain more susceptible to disease. Avoid soil that is sandy, salty, nutritionally deficient and ill-drained soil. If soil is not in the most favorable condition, improve it! Light sandy soil can be improved by placing mulch around the Plantain plants. This will improve water retention and prevent nutrients from percolating quickly into the soil. Nutritionally deficient soil can be improved by incorporating organic matter to the soil before you plant your Plantain and then mulch them thickly. This process should be repeated as often as possible. Plantain does not tolerate waterlogging because its roots will rot. This however can be resolved by planting the Plantain in raised beds.
