No pun intended, but you sounded too theoretical. More like a pharmacist student or an intern.

First, pharmacy schools are not built overnight. And even if that were possible, there is just no money to spare for that right now. Just follow the news and know what the economy is presently like. Secondly, pharmacists are needed to run and operate those new pharmacy schools you're suggesting the government should build. How many B.Pharm holders do we have on ground? Few. How many of them have a MSc degree? Then how many of those have PhD degrees in the respective departments? Now, tell us how many new pharmacy schools we can operate to produce the needed shortfall?

Second, how do you plan to service a country of 170 million when we probably have less than 10,000 community pharmacists in the country? As much as I loathe the founding of the PPMVL I have again and again at several fora agreed with the government on this initiative. How many of the pharmacists are willing to set up premises in remote villages? Not many, or not any. Don't the individuals living in these rural areas (>60% of Nigerian population) deserve ready access to medicines? Of course they do. And you still think drug supply should remain an exclusive preserve of pharmacists even when we can not meet society's demands?

Third, yes it sounded rosy because it is actually rosy. In my state most of the biggest pharmacies are owned by non-pharmacists. And from privileged information from PCN monitoring team in the state, such pharmacies frequently comply more with the expectations of the council than pharmacist-owned premises. It is only in non-pharmacist owned premises that you are certain to meet the superintendent pharmacists on seat, unlike pharmacist-owned premises where the pharmacist owner who frequently doubles as the superintendent is almost always missing from seat. I am telling you 2016 figure.

Hungry pharmacist... I'm really shocked the several unflattering words you have used in describing pharmacists in the space of 48 hours. For this reason alone I am going to end my response to you here. Those female pharmacists you talked down on for marrying whomever they want, and those ones you called hungry pharmacists just because they take up employment from non-pharmacists... You really need to learn decorum and how to accord respect to your colleagues (I'm assuming here that you are either a young pharmacist or an intending pharmacist).

But in all I wish you good luck.
Enough of the argument brother. There must always be differences in reasoning. Arguing with a learner is simply a waste of time he's still growing. Wait till he's grown.

Chairman, my argument is more on the major distributors. They are the ones that have made our drug market chaotic!

The patent medicine dealers are meant to sale over-the-counter medicines to the rural people, but you and I know that these guys deal more on the prescription drugs than the OTCs and trade more even in the cities than the rural areas. How do they have access to prescription based drugs? Of course from the dealers. This is why I advocate closure of all open drug markets in Nigeria and a more controlled drug distribution system, where government at all levels will invest and manned by qualified pharmacists. This way, we would be sure that the patent medicine dealers get only the OTCs.

I have been affected by this uncontrolled drug system we have in Nigeria, hence my concern. I lost my dad to gentamycin 280mg administered by one of the quack nurses we have in the country. All in the name of treating a so called infection, she loaded him with several doses of the drug and the man came down with kidney failure. This is just one of several cases of people being sent to their early graves by uncontrolled drug administration. Such couldn't have happened had ours been a sane society where untrained people don't have access to such drugs.

Talking about not having adequate manpower to run pharmacy schools, that's not entirely true. We have many academic pharmacists all over the world who will be interested in coming down here to work if we do the right thing.

Please, I never talked down on pharmacists, aside where I rightly stated that SOME of them trade their licenses for peanuts with drug dealers. You seem to be bent on pitching me against my respected colleagues. That's not fair!

A pharmacist with an industry cannot be compared to a Doctor with hospital in terms of the money they make. Emzor is richer than the most successful doctor in Nigeria.
I have blog designed for prospective pharmacy students including pharmacy students. The topics scan from scholarships, admission procedure etc. It is better to check it on my signature for more details

I still do not understand why anyone has to cram to study for a pharmacy degree. I immensely enjoyed my undergrad years as a pharmacy students, and yes I attended one of the most difficult faculties of pharmacy in Nigeria. Admittedly, majority of Nigerian students (be they Pharmacy students, Medical students, Yoruba, Business Admin students..etc) feel the need to cram to bag their respective degrees. That in itself is a failure of the educational system we run. And it is not limited to Pharmacy students. Students need to cram when the curriculum is lopsided in favour of didactic teaching to the detriment of exposure to real life situations. As a pharmacy student I found every bit of the experience fascinating, the microbiology, the biochemistry, the pharmacology, the pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, the pharmaceutics, the pharmacognosy, the forensics...
I just wish our educators in the country would have the courage to make learning more exciting than it currently is.

As men of honour, we join hands.
please i need your assistance am an aspiring pharmacy student

Pharmacy is a 5yr course+ 1yr internship+ 1yr Nysc. Any student who wishes to study pharmacy must first of all love chemistry!. And must be very good in phy maths bio.
Pharmacy is a course dat has a whole faculty dedicated to it alone (faculty of pharmacy) and comprises of five branches and one unit;
- Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy administration
- Pharmaceutical chemistry
- Pharmaceutics
- Pharmacognosy
- Pharmacology
- Drug research and production unit

To be a pharmacist, u must be able to cram. People often said that if u can study pharmacy, u can study medicine conveniently.
The sole work of a pharmacist is to ensure proper dispensation and usage of drugs.
Remember, only pharmacists are licensed to import, dispense and sell drugs.
As a pharmacist, u have career options in
(a). Community pharmacy
can i do m.sc in pharmacology after b.sc in physiology?

They ve no well defined role in Nigeria when patent medicine dealers can dispense drugs cool MLS guys shld b d closest to Doctors, followed by nurses then pharmacists a distant fourth

Ranking in medical care in Nigeria
Doctors
MLs
Nurses
Pharmacists
Others cool
In Nigeria you are still very wrong, adequate Health care can only be achieved by collaboration, so no basis for your ranking,
Ranking in developed countries 1st,not considering surgeons and specialists I dare to say

Whats this one saying?

Well, how would you know if he's actually right. . Have u studied Veterinary medicine b4?
The so called pharmacy u did is being studied by Vet too atleast to some degree from 200 to 600l. 400l excluded.. I don't see the big deal to studying pharmacy if u love it and I don't see any reason to cram if u understand what you're being taught.
Besides pharmacy in Nigeria is limited mostly to selling drugs to be honest and y'll know that even though some few are living up to the full potential of the course.

If you plan on working in a hospital, which is the case of many pharmacists, Dentistry is more preferable and lucrative. But if you want to fully go into business, then pharmacy is more lucrative.

Honestly, after going through the comments, I became scared.
I already have HND in sci lab tech, But i feel empty! I want save money and go back to study a more fulfilling course.
I have pharmacy in mind. And i also have ABU Zaria as the institution i intend studying in. Now, my problem is, as a DE applicant, I learnt they will send me to 100level cry cry cry
What I read here really got me scared if really the course is difficult.
Or should I just go for med lab sci?
