Ogun Speaker escapes ex-wife’s attack after marriage dissolution
…Adekunbi, estranged wife in open verbal war

SECURITY aides of the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Suraju Adekunbi, on Thursday prevented him from being assaulted by his estranged wife at the premises of a Customary Court in Abeokuta.

The incident occurred shortly after the ex-wife, Iyabo Adedotun, resisted attempt to take away their eight years old daughter, Samiat, whose custody was granted to the Speaker by the Customary Court located at Agbeloba area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Adedotun had dragged the Speaker to court asking for the dissolution of their marriage to allow her remarry and take custody of the only child produced by their 10-year-old marriage.

The plaintiff told the court that since their union hit the rock, the two-term Speaker had never fulfilled his statutory obligations on Simiat.
She, therefore, asked for the court’s nod to grant her freedom to marry a man of her choice, just as Adekunbi prayed for the custody of the child.
Peeved by the court judgment,
GatewayMail learnt that Adedotun was alleged to have charged at Adekunbi, after he jeered at her over the favourable court decision to grant him the custody of the girl who had been living with the ex-wife since their relationship turned sour.

But the security aides of the Speaker prevented access to him by the aggrieved woman, who also accused Adekunbi of death threat to her life.
The plaintiff, who is an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), however, engaged the Speaker in verbal attack in the presence of court officials.

Earlier in their judgement, the three-man panel unanimously granted the custody of Simiat to the Speaker, while it also ended the marital relationship.

They ordered that both parties have been granted freedom to marry companion of their choice.
While the Speaker immediately took custody of the child, Adedotun made spirited attempt to grab her daughter, but the move was resisted by Adekunbi who ordered his aides to take Simiat along with him.

In the ensuing drama, the pained NSCDC official ex-wife verbally attacked the Speaker who in return abused Adedotun, calling her unprintable names.
An unidentified NSCDC colleague of the estranged woman was alleged to have attempted to stop the court officials from handing over the child to the Speaker.

But, according to GatewayMail reliable source, a police officer who was within the court premises was reported to have invited his colleagues from a nearby police station while the NSCDC official also contacted his colleagues who also invaded the court.

At a point, the development turned rowdy when the cops in their desperate efforts to apprehend the NSCDC official for daring to obstruct the execution of the court judgment, were prevented by his colleagues.
The cops thereafter shot into the sky to scare away the surging crowd who had gathered within the court premises
while they whisked away the NSCDC official.

While speaking on behalf of Adekunbi, his Media Aide, Waheed Akinola, confirmed the incident.
Akinola, who stated that Adedotun was a ‘Baby Mama’ to the Speaker, explained that their union began before Adekunbi contested the election and became the state’s number three citizen.
According to him, the relationship produced a baby girl, who the court on Thursday ordered to be in custody of the Speaker.

His words: “The story is true; the lady is Baby Mama, who was in relationship with the Speaker some years ago, that was even before Adekunbi became Speaker.”

“The relationship produced a child who has been in custody of the woman, until today when the court ruled that the child, who is now eight years, should be in custody of the Speaker,” Akinola further explained.
The aide added that immediately after the judgement, which the ex-wife considered unfavourable, she became angry and began verbal attack on the Speaker calling him unprinted names and raining curses on him.

But in her reaction, Adedotun told journalists that she engaged in open verbal attack with Adekunbi because she was displeased to lose her child to him, who he alleged had since not shown concern on her.

The estranged wife also explained that she abused the Speaker because he mocked and insulted her after the judgement.

According to her, it was during the exchange of words that Adekunbi ordered his security aides to beat up some officials of NSCDC within the court premises.

Adedotun, in tears, however, lamented: “Are they saying I would not see my child again. How would I cope, a child we slept together overnight?”

I would really love to see the faces of these two kids. I mean Mr Speaker and his ex-wife. The woman has seen her hopes of becoming a future first lady dashed to pieces hence the outrage.
