If Prospecting For Oil In North Will Hasten Restructuring, Go Ahead- Afenifere by outknow: 10:58pm On Aug 16, 2016
The pan-Yoruba socio cultural organisation, Afenifere, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s order that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation increase tempo on oil exploration in the north-east is good for the economy of the country.

The Secretary-General of the association, Chief Sehinde Arogbofa said it would be part of the restructuring which the association had been clamoring for.

He said, “There is nothing wrong if they find oil in the north. That is why we are calling for restructuring, if that is his ( Buhari) own restructuring agenda, it is okay. We already have oil in the south and if he orders for prospect for oil in the north, there is nothing wrong in that .

“If that is what will hasten the restructuring of the country, he should go ahead. All we saying is that the country must be restructured .”

The Afenifere chieftain explained that the issue of prospecting for oil in the north-east was not a new idea, saying it would be a welcome development if the President intensified it.

He said, “We have said that any state that has oil should work on its oil and let other states without oil find their own natural resources to work on. God has endowed every state in this country with natural resources so let every state go and do something on them, the only thing is that the Federal Government should assist in taking off.

“If it is NNPC that was given the assignment, let them go ahead, there is nothing wrong with it but if it is the foreign firm I can say may be there is a hidden agenda somewhere.”

[size=13pt]Restructuring is not dissolution.
The only reason some northerners don't want restructuring (where the states keep 50% of what they produce and send the rest to the centre) is that they believe that the oil-producing areas will suddenly be by far more well off than other areas.

But it has been indicated severally that some non-oil-producing states are richer in resources than oil-producing states.

What we and the experts are saying is that all non-oil states in Nigeria will be as rich as the oil producing states today with under the resource control arrangement, and that some will even be richer than the oil-producing states.
