A statement released by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency:

The Agency received an alert via the CRM at about 6.39 am on a fire incident at 43 Shogbamu Street, New Garage, Bariga, Lagos on Tuesday 16th of August 2016. This promted immediate activation of the Agency's Emergency Response Team, Lagos State Fire Service from Ilupeju and Ikeja Fire Stations, Lagos State Ambulance Service and Nigeria Police Force to the scene.
Preminary investigation carried out by the ERT at the scene of the incident revealed that the inferno was caused by an electrical surge from an electronics shop. The timely intervention of the Lagos State Fire Service and other emergency responders curtailed the spread of the inferno to other buildings in the area.

There was no loss of life nor injury sustained by anyone. However, 9 rooms were affected at No 43 Shogbamu Street, while one room was affected at No 45 Shogbamu Street Bariga, while 5 shops all at No 43 were burnt with goods and properties worth millions of naira inside the shops.

The General Manager LASEMA Mr. Michael Akindele advised Lagosian to always ensure that all electrical appliances are switch off after the close of work or not in use at home and also avoid the use of naked cables and illegal connection.

It's so frustrating that things like this happen and there are all so many fake electrical and plumbing materials on the market. Going to the market and buying quality and safe materials should be the norm, not that you have to look for quality. I know some people that cut corners for investment properties, let's be careful not to endanger people's lives just to save a buck.

As humans, we can only reduce the outbreaks of fire. But we can't completely stop it. We just have to do our part in avoiding it.

What's more painful is the fact that the man went shopping some days before the incident to restock his shop... everything is burnt to ashes now including that fine generator he refused to sell to me.

Safety precautions is not a priority to many in this country..... Unfortunately, the only recognized safety body in government(FRSC) is not even safe!

The shop burnt is stored by electronic appliance sold by the owners. Its a big shop d owners sell Gen, gas, tv etc. God will help us in this recession period we pray that God save us from losses

When people cut corners to buy substandard electrical product, this is the result. When people use quack electricians instead of qualified licensed electricians this is the output, when the standard organisation responsible to regulate such irregularities refuses to sit up Such incident will continue to reoccur, penny wise pounds foolish we all pray for 24 hours power supply but believe me, the day we achieve that, many domestic and industrial building will go up in flames, epileptic power supply is delaying the accidents waiting to happen in the future
