A whiteman wrote this to spite blacks and justify their claim that we are devilish. Rather than see thru the fibs, Nigerians are accepting the tag, and propagating the lies.
This owes much to the scarcity of History classes in our colleges. Others end up writing our history for us.

The Nembe-British war was in 1895, most times recorded by most historians as the ‘’Akassa Raid’’ was the most significant event of the Nembe people, now Brass and Nembe LGA’s of Bayelsa state. The cause of the war was nothing but the trade monopoly given to the Royal Niger Company by the British Government under the Royal Charter in 1886. The Royal Niger Company went as far as molest, maim, kill and seize all Nembe trading canoes at the Niger Delta Coast along the Brass (Nembe) Kingdom.
Under that condition, late King William Koko and the Kings and Chiefs in all the component towns in the Brass/Nembe nation, successfully launched a dawn attack of more than a thousand warriors on the company’s headquarters at Akassa on the fateful morning of January 29th 1895 with no European casualties, which triggered a retaliatory raid in which the British destroyed the town of Brass and slaughtered an estimated four thousand people.

An Ijaw man, Koko was a convert to Christianity who later returned to the local traditional religion. Before becoming king, he had served as a Christian school teacher, and in 1889 this helped him in his rise to power.

The leading chiefs of Nembe, including Spiff, Samuel Sambo, and Cameroon, were all Christians, and after having ordered the destruction of Juju houses a large part of their reason for choosing Koko as king in succession to King Ockiya was that he was a fellow Christian.

With the settlement of European traders on the coast, Nembe had engaged in trade with them, but it was poorer than its neighbours Bonny and Calabar.

By the 1890s, there was intense resentment of Royal Niger Company's treatment of the people of the Niger delta and of its aggressive actions to exclude its competitors and to monopolize trade, denying the men of Nembe the access to markets which they had long enjoyed.

As king, Koko aimed to resist these pressures and tried to strengthen his hand by forming alliances with the states of Bonny and Okpoma.

In January 1895, he threw caution to the winds and led more than a thousand men in a dawn raid on the Royal Niger Company's headquarters at Akassa. Arriving on 29 January with between forty and fifty canoes, equipped with heavy guns, Koko captured the base with the loss of some forty lives, including twenty-four Company employees, destroyed warehouses and machinery, and took about sixty white men hostage, as well as carrying away a large quantity of booty, including money, trade goods, ammunition and a quick-firing gun.

Koko then sought to negotiate with the Company for the release of the hostages, his price being a return to free trading conditions, and on 2 February he wrote to Sir Claude MacDonald, the British consul-general, that he had no quarrel with the Queen but only with the Niger Company.

Despite this, the British refused Koko's demands, and more than forty of the men were then ceremoniously eaten.

Before you all buy this rubbish fed you by brainwashing education, note this's pure fairy tale.

At no point in time did Africans engage in cannibalism. As a matter of fact, Africans were of the impression white people were eating the slaves caught. In fact, the scenario painted in this story resembles exactly what the colonialists would do, and there are many similar stories of kidnapping by the British, Spanish, French, Portuguese. The British kidnapped men, women, kids, even kings!!. Ask anybody who know their history in Bini and they'll tell you this story actually looks like the kidnapping of Oba Ovonramwen in 1897, and the looting and burning of the entire village.

Just about the late 1800 century, Germans killed so many in Namibia, cut off their heads and cooked their skulls, carried the skulls back to Europe as a trophy. In Europe at that time you risk being ostracized by your society, if you were to return from Africa without some human skulls to give out as gifts.

The word Vandalism and Barbarism were derived from a Caucasian tribe known as the Vandals and Barberas. They were called this name due to their unending appetite for destruction of lives and property. Vandals are of Germanic origin while Barbaras are of Hungarian origin. This is according to their own history.

It's a pitiable dismal pismal. It's regrettably lubricious that white folks, who explored the continents of the black descendants, met their their unfortunate water-low, in a cannibalistic dismay. This news is shocking and apologetic! Let me quickly say that the people of the federal republic of Nigeria are throwing their weights against this hullabaloo.

I must say that Nigerian people and the microscopic few of the deltans, who witnessed the horrible calamity, are those masquerading as the avengers... they imbibe the culture of feeding as vultures in quest for their freedom, planted a rotten luck with a continuous pollution of their own vicinity. But when a crafty man buried himself, he struggle in idiocy.

I am not bamboozling you with highfalutin, I am only taking an elephant stand to discredit the man-eat-man attitudes, as recorded in the deltan region. Working with the global understanding within the pool of the western education, I hereby remind the chiefs and those wearing the traditional ornaments as bangles in that region to quickly decipher that those illicit actions, from the younger folks are only ephemeral to the nation building grin

Bullshit. Accusing an ethnic group of people of cannibalism was a common xenophobic occurrence back in those days. Remember back then Eurocentric historiography was used to whip up sentiments in the British Empire in order to justify their looting and pillaging of African territories.

Africa was referred to as the Dark Continent because they didn't yet know about our glorious history, so the white imperialists made up stories to tantalise the European public.

There is no doubt that the hostages may have been murdered, but eaten? Hell no. The Nembe people were industrious farmers and fishermen, not lawless flesh eating savages. The British made up the cannibalism part because it was the order of the day to accuse Africans of savagery, and to emphasise the reason why the 'savages' must be tamed, for the good of mankind.

People like the OP just swallow everything they read online hook, line and sinker without reasoning. Peddle falsehood long enough and it becomes fact.
