BY SAHARA REPORTERS, NEW YORKAUG 18, 2016
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) sealed off the Haf Haven Hotel, located at 24 Atiku Abubakar Way in Makurdi, Benue State on Thursday. According to statements made the hotel, owned by Senator George Akume, was shut down due to unpaid taxes.

Regina Chinazor Edeh, the leader of the FIRS enforcement team, said that the hotel owed N13.5 million in taxes since 2011 which includes unpaid company income tax, education tax, withholding taxes, and value added tax.

A management staffer of the hotel, Margaret Hinger, phoned Mr. Akume’s wife saying that Mrs. Edeh insisted that unless full payment of the tax liabilities was made the hotel would be sealed.

''I am duty-bound to seal off the hotel and am under instruction not to speak with anyone on phone. Please, pay the money, so we can leave your premises,'' Edeh reportedly said.

The team ordered the hotel to discharge its guests while staff closed for the day.

The hotel was subsequently sealed.

The enforcement team also shut down Treaties Bukka at Old Oturkpo Road Makurdi. According to the Warrant of Distrait, the eatery owes N52 million in Withholding Tax and Value Added Tax from 2013 to 2015.

The same fate befell Gwalina Suites Nigeria Limited, which owes N4.4 million in Withholding Tax and VAT.

Earlier in the week the FIRS sealed off the operational office of Skyjet Aviation Services Limited, located at the Kaduna International Airport. The aviation firm owes N‎178.4 million in Company Income Tax and Withholding Tax.

Why only sealing of premises? Why not jail time like it's done in saner climes?

Tax evasion is a criminal act and shutting of the premises amounts to nothing more than a mere slap to the wrist...

We need laws to limit/eliminate this kind of nonsense but I don't see the laggards in NASS being on top of this since they are more likely to be the major culprits, na dem and their companies dey tiff from public purse go still dodge tax payment.......

Honestly, the back and forth is getting nauseating. It is high time we started seeing these men do time!

Check Al Capone's story out- dude was a criminal who beat over a thousand raps in his lifetime, from murder to bootlegging, racketeering, prostitution, drugs, etc, but the one crime which he made the mistake of ignoring and which ultimately sealed his fate was tax evasion (very meagre amount sef)!! Those dudes in the West take that as serious a crime as treason- why can't we adopt the same??

I just pity Mad Dragon recording studio housed within the premises. Wonder what they'd do now.

How dem wan sell? For this country? Na OYO dem dey..

They can do lyrical content but they should never lose sight of what their consumer base is all about... It's mindless music over matter...

Asa is only winning because she is more of international brand , Idibia has watered down his stuff so he won't be kilked by the "bum bum" crew, (da yell is dat coded tinz ish?) Nneka is not bothering herself with naija matket and GT the guitar man has stopped making effort...

If they don't balance lyrical content with straight up Shake it , roll it but don't break it, na auction dem go auction all dem gadgets.. cheesy
