More Trouble In Ondo APC As Executive Members ‘Formally’ Remove Chairman

THE simmering crisis within the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has assumed a​new​ twist, as members of the executive committee announced on Monday they had removed the chairman, Isaac Kekemeke.

A statement by the party’s publicity ​secretary, Omo’Oba Adesanya, said Mr. Kekemeke was no longer the chairman of the party in the state.

An alleged imposition of an aspirant by the party’s national leader, Bola Tinubu,​on the delegates sparked a protest last week, where aggrieved members declared that Mr. Kekemeke would no longer lead the party in the state.

Although the said removal was informal and was immediately dismissed by Mr. Kekemeke, the spiraling grievances eventually enflamed aspirants and other executive members, leading to further demands for a formal sacking of the chairman.

Mr. Kekemeke is being accused of reneging on his promise to ensure free and fair primaries, against the call to have preferred candidates or zoning.

The aspirants,​who are leaders in their respective zones and numbering about 30, ​say they want to test their popularity at the polls rather than allow for a consensus candidate.

Party members held Mr. Kekemeke responsible for the action of Mr. Tinubu who had voiced his preference for Olusegun Abraham from Akoko and urged party officials to work for him.

Mr. Adesanya said in the statement that a vote of no confidence had been passed on the chairman by two-third of members of the state executive committee.

“Due process was followed, in accordance with the spirits and letters of the Party’s Constitution (Article 21) in removing the former Chairman from office,” the statement said.

“The Party further quoted Article 17 of the APC Constitution (October 2014 as amended) on tenure of Office;

“Article 17(v) which states that, subject to ratification by the National Convention or Congress, an Officer shall be relieved of his post at any time if a vote of ‘No Confidence’ is passed on him by two-third of members of the relevant Party organ.

“Article 17(vi): pursuant to this Constitution, where a vote of ‘No Confidence’ has been passed on an Officer, the relevant Party organ shall appoint another person to act in his place pending ratification by the National Convention or Congress.”

An acting Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, has therefore been appointed to fill the gap.

The party “advised the general public, security agencies, Banks/Financial institutions and members of the Party, to stop relating with Mr. Isaacs Kekemeke, in the capacity of his former office”.​

The statement also directed the former Mr. Kekemeke to submit all party properties in his possession to the State Secretary of the Party or the nearest police station.

“We wish him good luck in all his future endeavors,” the statement added.

Mr. Kekemeke would not pick his call when PREMIUM TIMES​ called on him to respond to the development.
