A lawyer and rights activist, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, has dragged the Federal Government, Attorney- General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami(SAN), Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Government of all states in Nigeria, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission and the National Hajj Commission to the Federal High Court in Lagos over the continued sponsorship of pilgrimage by the government.

Also sued are the FCT Minister, Attorneys- General of 36 States in Nigeria and the Welfare Boards for both Muslim and Christian pilgrims in the FCT and all States of the Federation.

In a fundamental right enforcement suit, the lawyer is claiming that by virtue of Section 10 of the Constitution, Nigeria is a secular state and as such, the continued sponsorship of Christian and Muslim pilgrims by both the state and federal government is illegal. He is consequently seeking for the disbandment of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission and the National Hajj Commission by the court.

He is equally seeking for the disbandment of the welfare boards for Muslim and Christian pilgrims in all states across the country. Besides, he is seeking the following declarations among others:

“That by virtue of Section 10 of the Constitution, the granting of concessionary exchange rate by the FG, AGF and the CBN Governor to Muslims going to hajj at Saudi Arabia in 2016 to enable them purchase their Pilgrim Travelling Allowance(PTA) at the rate of N197 to a dollar as against the prevailing market price of N318 to a dollar is preferential, illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional and a violation of the applicant and other Nigerians fundamental right to freedom of worship and against discrimination as provided for in Sections 38 and 42 of the Constitution.

Another hungry lawyer on the loose!

State's ponsoring of both Muslim and Christian pilgrims is as old as Nigeria. It took a Buhari to discontinue it. He even did it first with Hajj 2015 when he stopped it completely.

And talking of selling dollars at a certain price, same was done for Christians. So, if no one saw anything wrong when Christian pilgrims benefitted from it, why should any sane being see anything wrong with it now.

I have said it on many occasions that going on pilgrimage is personal affair of anyone wanting to, the govt has no business doing it. But for you to applaud one and condemn the other tells you're a hypocrite. Nothing more nothing less.

What has those pilgrims prayers done for us as a country? Disband both please.

I'm from Imo and I'd rather the government used the money in sponsoring pilgrims yearly to build a cottage hospital in an LGA

When will FG start sponsoring adherents of African religions too?

How is FG compensating others religions and atheists, despite collecting tax from them too?

What is the rationale behind Govt sponsoring people on religious and tourist exercise, which should be personal?

How has the sponsorship of these tourists to the so called holy sites impacted on us as a country and how has it reduced corruption and crimes?

Developed nations think of technology and education, underdeveloped countries think of religion.

The God is the provider for you and this country in general. Giving support to the intending pilgrims should not be seen as bad thing. But abusing that should never let unchecked.
If this lawyer can find the abuses in that process should help and expose.
But we should not forget the favor of God into our lives.

This is a constitutional matter and not a religious matter.

How is the govt compensating followers of other religions despite collecting tax from them?

I am one of those that want this nonsense called sponsorship of pilgrimage stopped by both federal and state govts.embarking on pilgrimage to Israel Italy and greece is not among the yardsticks listed in the Bible to make heaven. As a Christian, if i which to visit Israel as tourist, there should be no reason i should sponsored/supported by the govt.

Why should Muslims and Xtians be given preferential treatment?

Why should they be wasting our national reserve on their personal tourism fantasies?

Are others not Nigerians like Xtians and Muslims too,how is govt compensating others, yet Govt is collecting tax from all and using to subsidies fantasies of Xtians and Muslims.

Anybody that wants to go on holy sight seeing or whatever you call it, should do it personally from his pocket.

That is fairness and justice to all.

Government has no business sponsoring any religious body on any pilgrimage and stuff. It's bad enough that state governments even make budgets fir building mosques n religious houses of worship! Religion and spiritual matters are strictly private!

As a secular country with no stare religion adopted, the role of d govt should be limited to providing peaceful and safe environments for ease of practice of whatever religion without fear and which poses no danger to lives n properties!

Not necessarily. Being a taxpayer and a citizen doesn't necessarily grant you locus standing... But what do I know. Maybe a qualified administrative lawyer can enlighten us further...

No one is disputing that.

The message remains all religions must be catered for and not the 2 imported religions always at each others throat.

How is govt compensating other religions despite contributing their tax that only Xtians and Muslims are spending?
