Good Morning, Yes I know its not throwback Thursday yet but the massive action of European Football across the Weekend have got me reminiscing. Just look at the crowd at a 1978 match between Rangers of Enugu and Bendel Insurance of Benin. What happened that in less than a generation our people lost their love for their own local leagues and became fixated on foreign leagues?

1. Insecurity. The stadiums became unsafe. Pitch invasion, match violence, etc. 2. Organisation. The league suffered in the hands of NFA. No publicity (NPL was not on TV for a long while), corruption and match fixing was rife. 3. Consistency. Due to poor organisation, there was no sponsorship so the clubs weren't making money hence they the lacked form and consistency. Coaches and players jumped to other clubs as they will. Cote Divoire, Tunisia, SA, India and even Bangladesh got Nigerian players. Changing 100% of players year-in year-out makes the fanship of any of our clubs difficult. We don't know the bloody players! 4. Austerity. Na only man wey chop belle full go think about recreating with sports by going to the stadium to watch football. I think things have been getting better in recent times. I like Enyimba, but Aba is far my guy Is there any Lagos team? I remember there was a Julius Berger. 1 Like |
