Mining industry veteran Hugh Morgan heads a private syndicate that has made a potentially world class, and highly unusual, nickel discovery in the heart of Nigeria.

The discovery is unusual because the nickel is found in small balls up to 3mm in diameter of a high purity in shallow soils in what could be the surface expression of a much bigger hard-rock nickel field.

The nickel balls, rumoured to grade better than 90 per cent nickel and thought to be a world first given their widespread distribution, offer the potential for early cashflow from a simple and low-cost screening operation to fund a full assessment of the find that has exploration circles buzzing.

Details on the find are sketchy. When asked to comment last week, Mr Morgan would only say it was for the Nigerian government to make an announcement.

Nickel is no stranger to the Liberal Party bulwark and former Reserve Bank board member. Between 1990 and 2003 he was chief executive of Western Mining Corporation (taken over by BHP Billiton in 2005) when it was Australia’s biggest nickel producer.

What is known is that Nigeria’s Minister for Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi, is listed to speak at the three-day Africa Down Under mining conference at Perth’s Pan Pacific Hotel next month, with past conferences drawing bumper crowds.

Dr Fayemi is to speak first on Wednesday September 7, and Mr Morgan will follow along with consulting geologist Louisa Lawrance. Mr Morgan is listed as speaking as a director of the private company Comet Minerals.

The discovery, Titan, is rumoured to be close to Dangoma, a small farming town about 160km northeast of the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

Dr Fayemi is one of 13 African mines ministers to attend this year’s Africa Down Under, reflecting the importance African nations place on attracting Australian mining expertise and funding for mining.

Nigeria itself has a stated ambition to grow its mining sector as an offset to its dependence on the oil industry, which has been ravaged by the slump in prices.

It has said it wants to attract billions of dollars of new investment in the sector, a push that could benefit from likely international interest in the Titan find by Mr Morgan’s private syndicate.

Earlier this month, Dr Fayemi told Bloomberg that about $US5 billion would “kickstart the mining sector”.

“In two to five years, we want to have started production of iron ore, lead, zinc, bitumen, nickel, coal and gold at a serious scale,” he said.

Nice...

Nickel-containing materials play a major role in our everyday lives – food preparation equipment, mobile phones, medical equipment, transport, buildings, power generation – the list is almost endless. They are selected because - compared with other materials - they offer better corrosion resistance, better toughness, better strength at high and low temperatures, and a range of special magnetic and electronic properties.

Most important are alloys of iron, nickel and chromium, of which stainless steels (frequently 8-12% nickel) are the largest volume. Nickel based alloys - like stainless steel but with higher nickel contents - are used for more demanding applications such as gas turbines and some chemical plants.Turbine

In addition, iron and nickel alloys are used in electronics and specialist engineering, while copper-nickel alloys are used for coinage and marine engineering.

There are about 3000 nickel-containing alloys in everyday use. About 90% of all new nickel sold each year goes into alloys, two-thirds going into stainless steel.

I heard about this 3 weeks ago.
90% purity and unbelievable spread
A semblance of conventional Nigerian governance is returning gradually.
Power generation capacity is already pushing towards 10,000MW even if the Creek criminals are destroying installations. The Idle capacity is there.
Like I said in one thread,Things are happening.
Those people stuck in the cities and waiting for their pastors and Imams to prey to aliens to provide a useless jobs for them are wasting the opportunities.
Every lack is an opportunity.
Nigeria wasted $1.5 billion on importing fruit juice last year.
Likewise wasted billions of US dollars importing
milk,
chocolate,
liquor,
petrol,
diesel,
petrochemicals
Rice
Sorghum
Tomatoes
building materials made of clay and mud
Cotton and textile.
Cooking utensils made of ceramic.
Cutlerry made from iron, brass and aluminium.

Then you wonder why you do not have jobs?
The last government even went as far as giving away import waivers for these items ;thereby depressing the local economy further.
According to Jonathan , no one knows better than the IMF and world Bank.
Well we have a government today who is ready to tell the IMF and the world Bank to go to hell.
Hopefully we can move from the conventional to a more international standard of governance.
Put this ,gold, tin, aluminium and iron on nitro and the country is well on her way to giving oil the finger.

Good news about Nigeria today.. Thank you lord grin grin

At least our president will remember that there are other resources we have than still searching for oil with all focus in 2016.

Until the ruling classes begin to engage their brains, stop being kleptomaniacs and strive to provide an enabling environment for the average citizen to flourish; Until the youth are taught that there is dignity in labour and to stop thinking about 'when i hammer'; Until Nigerian's are able to utilise their spare time productively rather than being lazy and poor time keepers; Until the majority of citizenry are united in their ideology and vision for the country; even if *enter name of any foreign company* finds the biggest, world class (not sure of this as an adjective in describing metals) diamonds or an ocean of crude oil reserves, NIGERIA will still remain the uninhabitable zoo that it is today in the eyes of an average human.

Fayemi never studied sciences in any of his 3 degrees yet, he's performing well, a strong civil service is enough for any minister, irrespective of discipline to perform.

I hope they also find the oil in Borno, and more goats to export in Jigawa and Kebbi so that soldiers stealing our oil in the creeks will be withdrawn from the Niger Delta

BUHARI shoud discover all the minerals that are more valuable than crude oil in the North so that they could leave our God given oil for us.
Buhari, an idiotic, illiterate, bigoted Islamist fanatic ruling over elites in this 21st century............an aberration.

Mineral Resources everywhere and yet we suffer as citizens. I would have loved it that our colonists left much later. We would have been much better than even South Africa right now.

That is why we are not developed at all...and not just Nigeria.

While it is good news, we have to remember that raw materials too have uses....and it is time we started using them too....instead of selling them off and sharing the fighting over the money.

I also hope that all of you oil fighters in the North and South start exporting manufactured computers, cars, bikes, jet planes, oil rigs, heavy equipment, clothing, etc....so that we can earn some real money.

Because selling oil and minerals and agric is so 1960's. Strong nations live from working hard, not from selling raw materials and using the money acquired to import and import and wreck the economy via overimport.
