What these akatas are now doing is no different from what happened to the continent during the 1800s: culture appropriation. Watching the just concluded MTV VMAs I noticed all the African-American acts performed at one point or the other African-themed dance moves and sometimes added an afrobeat sound to their songs. Anyone who didn't notice should watch the show again with a critical view and they'd see what I've mentioned.
The new cool amongst black artists is coming to the continent to borrow our style then make money entertaining the white man -- some people find this a good turn of events but I'm still on the fence regarding it.
