The management of the University of Ibadan has terminated the appointment of Adenike Ogunshe, a senior lecturer.

Ogunshe, who has taught in the university for 15 years, was sacked for refusing to vacate her office which was termed a preparatory room.

The doctor of microbiology told TheCable Lifestyle that she had been receiving death threats since 2006 over her refusal to exit the office.

She said: “I was asked to move out of my office to another office. The first time, they said that the reason they wanted me to move out was that they wanted a resident technologist to stay in my office and I told them that I had a security issue which would make it difficult for me to move out because the case is with the Nigeria Police.

“The university of Ibadan security took me to Sango police station with their van in 2006 when I started getting death threats, at a point I received a blood written letter and the DPO asked for the location of my office and house. I told them everything and he told them then that if anything happened to me, there would be a case against UI.

“A security detail was attached to me by the police and I got another message that the life of the security man was not safe. A friend relocated me to Polytechnic of Ibadan but the threats didn’t stop.

“Then they said they wanted to move me because the place belonged to another department, then I asked that what about other lecturers who are on the same block with me, why am I the only one to be moved. Later, they said my office is a preparatory room and I should move.”

When contacted by TheCable Lifestyle, Tunji Oladejo, UI director of public communications, said that her appointment was not terminated for refusal to vacate her office and demanded to see the documents that stated otherwise.

“That can’t be true, can you send the letter to me if you want me to react to that, I will do so but let me see the letter that you want me to comment on, I must see it,” Oladejo said.

GENESIS OF OGUNSHE’S TRAVAILS

She explained that her problems started after she opposed the appointment of a head of department which she claimed was against the regulations of the university.

“I was employed in 2000 and had no major problems until 2006. According to regulations, a Professor should be the Head of Department, while in the absence of a Professor, a Reader (Associate Professor) / Senior Lecturer will be an Acting HOD, and a Lecturer I can only be a Coordinator.

“A Prof. A.I. Sanni wanted to be the HOD in 2006 but a Senior Lecturer who was brought to the Department and mentored by Prof. Sanni, Dr. A.A. Onilude, also wanted to be Ag. HOD. There were serious reactions all over the campus when the then VC, Prof. O.A. Bamiro appointed Dr. Onilude as Ag. HOD.

“The Academic Staff on the campus even demanded an emergency senate meeting due to the controversial appointment of Dr. Onilude. When Prof. Bamiro insisted on not reversing himself, Senate demanded that the case be forwarded to Senate. I was also one of those who reacted against the controversial appointment, and wrote to that effect. Since then (2006) till date I had gone through hell on the University of Ibadan campus.”

She further explained that a case was brought up against her during the tenure of Isaac Adewole, the immediate past vice chancellor of the university who is now serving as minister of health.

“Prof Adewole wrote to NUC that I had been tried for four allegations such as collecting bribe from students, refusal to move from a preparatory room. I got a letter from NUC and I wrote back saying that the allegations were false. I also told them that I was going to sue NUC for defamation.

“After that, Prof Adewole instructed that I should be issued a query for refusing to vacate a preparatory room and I demanded for earlier documents that showed that I had earlier refused to leave the preparatory room. In that same response, I stated my reasons for not wanting to leave the office.”

A HISTORY OF QUERIES

Subsequently, she petitioned the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) over the matter and after investigation, the body concluded that she should be given a strong reprimand.

The NUC’s resolution read in part: “Following the Commission’s enquiry from the University on the various issues raised in your appeal, the Vice Chancellor has written to explain the effort the University has taken to resolve the alleged grievances.

“The two standing Committees of the University, STC and SSDC that investigated your allegations found you culpable and recommended that you should be strongly reprimanded.”

In January 2015, Ogunshe received an invitation to appear before the disciplinary committee for further consideration over the “allegation of refusal to vacate preparatory room in the final year laboratory of department of Botany”, a similar query to the one she received in 2013.

The lecturer appeared before the committee but never got a feedback for over a year.

Then in June 2016, she received a letter titled “COUNCIL DECISION- Allegation of refusal to vacate preparatory room in the final year laboratory levelled against Dr Adenike Ogunshe, senior lecturer, department of Microbiology”.

The letter, signed by Stella Soola, deputy registrar, approved the recommendation of the senior staff disciplinary committee to terminate her 15-year-appointment with the university.

The senior lecturer who has been due for promotion to professor since 2013 however, said the decision of the council was not based on the allegation she was tried for.

“The decision of council was not based on being found guilty of allegation refusal to vacate preparatory room in final year laboratory, which is the allegation for which I was tried.

“According to the letter under reference, council considered the recommendation from the SSDC with respect to the subject, which is allegation of refusal to vacate preparatory room in final year laboratory. However, the decision of Council that my appointment with the University be terminated was based on being found guilty of allegation of insubordination and flagrant disregard for constituted authority.

“I was never tried at any time, by the SSDC or any other committee, for insubordination and flagrant disregard for constituted authority, upon which the Council decision was based.

“There must have therefore, been deliberate attempt not to give me notice of those reasons, as contained in the alleging document(s), even when I requested for it (them) on 07/05/2013.

“If such document(s) had contained three count charges, (i) insubordination (ii) flagrant disregard for constituted authority and (iii) refusal to vacate preparatory room in final year laboratory, instead of the only allegation written to me about, i.e., refusal to vacate preparatory room in final year laboratory, I would have responded to the three count charges.”

In spite of her termination, Ogunshe’s personal profile page on the institution’s website still exists.

“Adenike O. Ogunshe, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Ibadan) Applied Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Lecturer II”, says the information on the page.

All these universities administrators are poor in administration. Even if this madam was guilty, she has raised valid points that can warrant the court looking into the matter. The court can also reverse her termination and award damages against U.I up to the tune of 10m.

This is a complex situation. For a Federal university to terminate appointment of a lecturer there must be something underground.
The lecturer agrees that she was served queries previously that is a very dangerous situation to any employee

She for Don vacate the office jejerly. What is in an office? Now she's gotten more than she bargained for. She lost a professorship promotion and now her job. Even if she wins in court, her relationship with the university will never remain the same again.Somethings in life you just overlook it and move on. It's not all the time you fight for your rights. The academic environment in Nigeria especially in universities can be a very terrible place to work especially if you are not yet a prof and you have good prospects as your seniors or even colleagues can be very envious and can do all sorts to get you out e.g. juju.

I fear universities environment, very deadly but not many are aware.

Madam Lecturer,

I am just curious! Is there juju or diamond in that office that made you not to want to leave the office?

Your employer says change office, they did not say move out of UI, what is so strange in this?

Stubbornness can sometimes border on stupidity.

Foolishness, pride....he whom the gods want to kill, they ll first make go mad..... Now that she has lost her job, in this buhari - economy, because of ordinary office? private office OOO? Office that doesnt produce pounds and dollars daily?

Is her worth reduced by moving to a shared office? Is her worth reduced by not being a HOD? When the NUC queried her, she threatened to sue them. that reeks of arrogance.

Every profession has regulatory bodies that can question your "fitness to practice" and when concerns are raised, you should be addressing them and not threatening legal suits.

I hope she is happy with her home "office" now where she can spread her self yakata, dance around yakata and be the HOD of her abode

Clear case of witch hunters....

MORE TRUTHS REVEALED

bayooooooo:
It reads like a classic case of arrogance of the weak, what the Yoruba would call (agidi mekunu). What's in office? Who is she that a whole faculty of science would order her to vacate an office but still dragging? She could have even used the opportunity to demand for a better office but chose to conveniently disregard Dean's directive. She foolishly played into the hands of her enemies.

1. There were documented instances of her not turning up for lectures. She was rightly queried for dereliction of duty. Now, I had lecturers who casually moved their courses to Saturday while I was in UI. Nobody cared, perhaps except the students. But if you are fighting your HODs, Onilude, Fagade etc, you can't afford to be one of such lecturers. You must truly be above board in everything to fight people who can end your career.

2. There was an instruction from the Dean of Faculty of Science tying her office to a successful accreditation (see politics, lol). She disregarded the directive which would be interpreted in official quarters as working against accreditation of the department. So, from department to faculty, she branded herself a bad person. No where in her entire story did she offer to vacate an office provided the faculty was willing to provide a better alternative for her. For her it's that office or nothing. Now after her sack, would she still have access to the office?

3.She is not loved by students. This is not a case of a popular lecturer being victimized by the authorities. In either 2004 or 2005, I took MIC 221 (Introductory Microbiology) as one of my out-of-department requirements. She was one of the lecturers. For you to enter her class, she would demand you tuck in your shirts regardless of what you wear. She had other ridiculous conditions for ladies. In her test, I recall, she would ask that you write all you have learnt in that course and there is no extra sheet. No specific question, just write all you have learnt. I managed to get an A in the course but many students did not have good words for her.

In school, we all played politics, students, teachers, non-academic staff etc. When her candidate for HOD lost, she should have embraced the winner, or chose to fight another day. A simple meeting with her HOD Onilude, who was an ASUU veteran, would have resolved the issue. "I would have loved Prof Sanni to win but now that God has done it for you, remember me in your kingdom" would have solved it. Those who overlooked a professor for Onilude to become HOD are better equipped to fight the battle than a mere lecturer who is just starting an academic career.

I don't think UI would sack a lecturer who petitioned the presidency, the NUC, ASUU etc without valid reasons especially in a case that has dragged for more than ten years and had seen three vice chancellors. When some people are more powerful than you are, wisdom demands you make them your friends, not enemies. Sometimes, you eat the humble pie and beg your enemies to leave you alone. Arrogance kills.

God bless you for this post. I never cease to wonder why a person employed to only Reseach, Teaching, and Mentoring of subordinates should preoccupy himself with a purely Administrative post! What is in a post? How many administrative did Einstein hold, or Soyinka, or Achebe, or other serious scholars?

Refusal to vacate office as directed by constituted authority is an act of insubordination and flagrant disregard for constituted authority. You don't act with such disobedience in the public service & not face the accompanying penalty. Excuse of challenging the appointment on an HOD are untenable. I hope she will now go home with the office.
