Sunday was a relatively calm day in Lagos after Friday’s upheaval which meant that Arthur Ashe, Jeff Borowiak and Tom Okker with Donald Easum could go to the Brazilian ambassador’s residence to have lunch with Pele. Whereas the five American players staying with the elderly American couple had nothing to do. “They had this world professional dart board and darts and we were bored. There were these huge lizards running around the property,” Erik Van Dillen said. “We decided to go on a big safari hunt and see if we can get them. We weren’t very politically correct at the time.” The lizards were too quick for the players despite their best efforts. “So Eddie Dibbs is going one way and I am going another and he throws a dart which ricochets off the cement floor and sticks right into my leg. It hurt for a little bit.” Bob Lutz laughed as he recalled the incident. “We had a lot of fun considering what was happening.”

Dibbs and Lutz later approached some soldiers stationed at a road block down the street to chat with them. The soldiers were eating their rations and seemed friendly. The players told them that they were in Lagos to play a tennis tournament. All of a sudden, their Commanding Officer showed up and shouted at the players “What are you doing here? Are you CIA? Are you spies? Get out of here!” The players hurried back to their residence.

The 18-man WCT contingent comprising of 14 players, 2 WCT officials and 2 English journalists departed from their Ikoyi rendezvous point in a convoy of cars in the early hours of Tuesday, February 17, for Lagos International Airport. The Federal Military Government provided an armed police escort to the airport. This ensured that the vehicles were able to pass through the roadblocks that dotted the city. The Government also kept its word by providing an airplane and lifting it’s imposed flight restrictions to let the tennis contingent leave Lagos airspace. They were the first foreigners allowed to leave the country after the attempted coup. The local Pepsi-Cola Manager approached Donald Easum the day before to enquire about Pele and his entourage traveling with the WCT contingent but official government permission couldn’t be secured in time for this to happen. There was a large military presence at the airport to prevent fugitives like Dimka from leaving the country. The plane departed at 7.00am in order to catch the AZ 837 Alitalia plane which left Accra at 8.15am and arrived in Rome at 2.35pm. There was an eruption of cheers by the players as the aircraft took off from the Lagos International Airport runaway. They were relieved that their ordeal was finally over.

“It was an unfortunate incident”, Harold Solomon recalled. “We were going down to have a major tournament in a developing African country and it was a case of bad timing that we were there when they had an unfortunate coup de’tat.”

The Rome WCT tournament was delayed by a day to accommodate the late arrival of the players. Arthur Ashe went on to win this tournament. Pele eventually left Lagos when the Federal Military Government re-opened the borders and airports a few days later. The Brazilian ambassador insisted that he wore an aviator’s uniform to conceal his identity. The greatest danger that Pele faced throughout his time in Lagos was to lose money during games of gin rummy in the Federal Palace hotel.

The WCT informed Arthur Ashe, Jeff Borowiak and Dick Stockton when they got to Rome that they had to honour their Lagos Tennis Classic match commitments. They had to complete the event to ensure that the prize money and Hagger points for the singles tournament were appropriately distributed. The only available opportunity to do this was at the Caracas WCT Open. On April 1, in the middle of the Caracas tournament, Arthur Ashe completed his unfinished semifinal match against Borowiak by beating him. The following day, April 2, he faced Stockton in the final and lost to him. The match was over in less than an hour and it was Stockton’s first ever victory against Ashe. The score was 6-3, 6-2. The WCT never held another tennis tournament in Nigeria. The Lagos International Airport was renamed ‘Murtala Mohammed International Airport’ a few days after his assassination. Dimka was on the run for three weeks after the coup attempt before his eventual capture on March 5. He was executed on May 15, 1976. There was never an official Government explanation for the military interruption of the Ashe vs Borowiak semi-final match.

This longform story is based on archival newspaper research, biographical accounts of key characters, US Embassy/State Department cables plus telephone interviews with Tom Okker, Stan Smith, Harold Solomon, Dick Stockton, Bob Lutz, John McDonald, Ismail El Shafei, Paul Svehlik, and Erik Van Dillen.

My thanks to everyone who helped me during the reporting and writing of this story.

if ur a muslim ?

plz explain to me how was the shia-sunni killings, persecution of sufis and ahmeddiyas , brutal treatment of christians / kafirs during jihad against crusaders, slavery etc etc any way different than or worse than caste system.

ur answer will be influenced by ur religion and the newspapers u studied and ur stand towards Indian Hindus wink

2ndly caste system in modern india exists in newspapers looking to make sensational news like BBC, Sunday guardian who still have to let go of colonial handover and the indian presstitudes

Interesting,

I see Indians deny castes too. This one must be a Gujarati.

Stop being hysterical and evasive and explain how you can have a group of people in your country treated as sub human, clean up after you for free and claim democracy. We know about your untouchables, more like your slaves. You even have separate temples!!!! The toilet cleaners who empty your toilets with their bare hands - for free .

Calling me me names won't make my question disappear...

How did the democracy work exactly? undecided

MtuMsuper:

NairobiWalker said it in plain English with a list of common basic commodities that have witnessed price hikes since the last few years. He hasn't included fuel prices, rent amounts, transportation costs and school and medical fees, all of which have risen.
You see, you should understand how and when big macro infrastructure projects affect and effect micro economic change, and the former is not always neccesarily true of the latter. Policies that create jobs and put people at work for long, and food on people's plates, constantly, are what count. FYI, there has been a steady rise of youth unemployment and under employment, in spite of paper GDP growth.

My origins are in western kenya and i can assure you that sugar politics is a very sharp sword in those areas. That Kidero "ruined " Mumias sugar is a cheap lousy lie used by his detractors for political mileage. This isn't the place or time to discuss a man's career, but rest assured it was his successor who steered the ship aground. That being said, there is no sober debate on sugar issues in Kenya, and those voices who speak reason, never get heard. The feeling on the ground is that successive regimes have never helped the locals achieve prosperity by growing cane, by not using the levers of govt to do so. For example, govt turns a blind eye to the embezzlement of cess funds to fix roads in sugar zones, an unthinkable act in a tea growing zone. Also, govt doesn't show the same zeal in developing cane varieties via agric research institutions, that grows quicker and juicier than they do for crop varieties not grown in sugar zones. Most cane varieties in Kenya mature at 30+ months, FYI. In 2017, that's criminal!

Well said.

To those who have Forgotten History.

The first Country Mandela visited After being released from prison was Nigeria .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlRMmNhsg9Y

Funny thing is that , Mandela said the samething to every African country he visited, that's just how the guy was. He visited the countries that played the major role the last, saving the best for last I guess. In all his writings he doesn't mention Nigeria but never fails to mention our Angolan , Cuban, Tanzanian, Zambian brothers.

I read somewhere that you also claimed he lived in Nigeria grin. What a fuckn joke that story was in SA when it broke out from Nigeria after Mandela's death. Even Trevor Noah did a piece on the guy who made those claims , we called him the " 419 grand dad" ......passing his talents over to his 419 grand kids lmfao. Why didn't he tell these tales when the guy was alive ? Why are there no records or even a page in his books or those of his family members detailing this fairytale?. Why is this story only told by Nigerian journalists? No SA ; media , political organization, n.g.o , etc knows this . Remember the ANC compiled a list of countries that played a huge role and he was there , but there's no mention of Nigeria grin. You were scammed by your leaders and elders as they usually do. Don't take it out on us , go to them and demand the " money " you donated because it never reached our shores. Go and ask them where these suppozed soldiers who died " fighting for us " were fighting because they never came to SA , the only time your cowards starting flocking here is when all was well. Nowenuse:

Listen here. One thing you will never find a Nigerian doing is denying the situation of things in their country. No we will not!
I will not deny the fact that some of the things you listed here are not found in Nigeria, however we are beginning to develop all these things.

The national housing mortgage system is now being introduced into Nigeria where you can own a good and comfortable house for a very small amount of money from the begining (for just about 100 dollars).

Feeding primary school students has been launched and kicked off in some Nigerian states.

Our government schools which are also scott- free to SS3 (12th grade) have also seen drastic improvement in most states.
Our university tuition is also as good as free, i paid only 50 dollars per session in my university! And upon that, i received annual bursary payments! Most Nigerian students are embursed annually.

Nigerians are not taxed heavily like most other countries like yours where people are even taxed for the air they breathe, this to a large extent has made our cost of living very very cheap compared to other african countries.

Iwill look for the picture of my family house in a northern Nigerian village for you and you will see that the road at the front of the house is tarred. Many Nigerian villages and towns have tarred roads, but i won't argue the fact that many more are not tarred.

The decades of military rule in Nigeria destroyed the progress of Nigeria and set us decades backwards in development and this is why we are where we are today. However, since the return of democracy, a lot of improvements have been recorded and many more are on track!
You can see the new world class cities and islands being built in Nigeria from the scratch! This is to tell you we are not joking! We are working very hard to recover from the wasted and destroyed years of the military era. This is why we do not have the time or like to engage in flexing muscles with other countries. You guys are the ones always interested in muscle flexing!
You fools keep acting as if your country is paradise when there are also enough problems in your country for Africa!

So, look here biitch, pointing out Nigeria's problems is not painful to any Nigerians, we know and fully acknowledge our problems and are working hard!

Where were you guys when we displaced you to become the largest economy in Africa? Were you guys not taking the lead for donkey years in the past?

I really do not want to start showing you pictures about developments in Nigeria cos we have been doing that over a thousand pages ago till now! There are other important things to discuss!

Lol , calling me a bitch in every mention must really do something to you hey ? grin but the funny thing is that it won't change the content of the discussion.

I will entertain the bolded.

1. Firstly I was talking about basic amenities, you said they are in white areas only and I asked you to point them to me and you didn't? I even asked if you were talking about Orania? Lol. I'm glad you're are starting to deliver these services to your people because we've been doing that for decades now hence the majority of our population enjoys them . So i guess there's no use denying our progress in this regard and that you are still far behind us to compare. Done !

2. Please do find me those pictures soon , I would love to see how "many" of of your villages are tarred yet your major cities where you get the most visitors like Lagos are partially tarred, something doesn't add up here but like you said, you will show me the proof.

3. At the third bolded , please stop lying. You are the ones always doing the dyck measuring with other countries especially the one that gives you guys nightmares, SA. If all those things I mentioned make SA sound like paradise to you then that tells us a lot. You people hate it when others showcase the positive things about their nations , it hurts you like hell hence you always want to show the negatives instead promoting the good about your own country. No nation is without problems but how those nations decide to tackle their issues is what makes them unique.

Stop being hurt by the good things in other countries and focus on working hard to achieve them, we are not where we are because we kneeled and prayed for developments or cussed other nations trying to improve, we got our hands dirty even under harsh conditions. Do the same and see what will happen.

The tarred road from almost all cities in Nigeria have been posted over a thousand pages on this thread. I don't think there's a city in Nigeria without a tarred road, so you clearly don't know what you are saying.
Southafrica is not richer than Nigeria or clearly ahead like you think. Most of the things you say here are from ignorance.
Nigeria may not be where she's supposed to be, but after obasanjo's Government(in 2008), she has been making progress in infrastructure which the military regime and obasanjo did not take too seriously. But for corruption in Jonathan's Government, we should have had the fastest growing construction industry in the world based on the new projects all over.
But I'm not telling you, l'm lecturing the ignorant who come here to spew outdated and false rubbish.

Lionessza this is not from a Nigerian website, it is country data.......

The prevailing perception in Nigeria's foreign policy was that, as predominant the African leader, it should play a bigbrother role in relations with African states. Nigeria was a founding member of the OAU and often channeled major policy initiatives through that organization. Most of its relations with other African states took place outside the OAU framework but were guided by OAU principles. Nigeria's primary African commitment was to liberate the continent from the last vestiges of colonialism and to eradicate apartheid in South Africa. Promoting liberation had grown from a weak and conservative stance during the 1960s to an increasingly firm push after the civil war. This commitment was pursued most actively after Murtala Muhammad successfully backed the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola's ascent to power in Angola in 1975 by providing the swing vote in the OAU decision to recognize the MPLA. Nigeria had played a role in the independence of Zimbabwe and in the late 1980s was active in assisting Nambibia to achieve independence of Namibia. In the latter case, it contributed about US$20 million to assist the South West Africa People's Organization in the 1989 elections and other preparations for Namibian independence. The country also contributed financially to liberation movements in South Africa and to the front line states of Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, which were constantly harassed by South Africa. Although Nigeria's armed forces were among the largest in black Africa in the early 1990s, sizable military might has rarely been used in foreign policy (see Local and Bilateral Issues; African and Regional Issues , ch. 5). The army participated in peacekeeping forces, either alone or through the OAU and contributed personnel to United Nations peacekeeping missions. In line with its ECOWAS comunitment, Nigeria was one of the main contributors of troops to the ECOWAS Cease-fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) sent to Liberia August 23, 1990 after the peace talks there failed. Additional forces were sent in late September 1990 under a Nigerian field commander, General Doganyaro. Threats to fight for southern African liberation were made but not acted on, but Nigeria did give military and financial aid to the African National Congress for its efforts against the apartheid regime in South Africa and provided military equipments to Mozambique to help its struggle South African-backed guerrillas.
In addition, Nigeria gave aid and technical assistance to several African states, often through the African Development Bank of which it was a major benefactor. In 1987 a Technical Aid Corps, operating along the lines of the United States Peace Corps, was established. Under it, young Nigerian professionals served in other African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries where their expertise was needed. Nigeria also provided scholarships and fellowships, training facilities, grants, equipment, and medical supplies, and subsidized oil during the 1970s' oil crisis to African countries under certain conditions.
In July 1974, the Gowon government decided to sell crude oil at concessionary rates to African countries on condition that they had their own refineries and would not re-export to third countries. The decision came despite Nigeria's role as an Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member generally in favor of higher prices and after more than two years of deliberations. Nigeria acted largely in response to external pressures: international actors attempted to divide Third World countries into OPEC members and nonoil producers; various African countries, especially Liberia, begged for less expensive oil; and both the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries had established programs to aid poor countries while encouraging other oil producers, especially African nations, to follow suit. Providing subsidies for African countries was a safe move for Nigeria because Africa comprised only a small portion of the country's total oil export market, it enhanced Nigeria's position and influence in Africa while building African solidarity, and it protected security interests by preventing economic decline. Moreover, this example of generosity aided Nigeria in its efforts to create ECOWAS. In November 1990, Babangida suggested that Nigeria might again offer concessionary prices to other African countries as the Middle East crises pushed oil prices upward.

India’s Scientists Are Making a Mark in These Six Global Mega Science Projects

1. LIGO – Gravitational Wave Analysis

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time caused by violent and energetic processes in the universe. LIGO or Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory is a large-scale physics experiment that detects cosmic gravitational waves and develops them as an astronomical tool.

There are two LIGO observatories in USA (at Livingston and Richland) that are operated by Caltech and MIT. The Indian team in the global LIGO collaboration, which is involved in analysing the data collected by LIGO observatories, has 60 members.

Work has also begun on building a LIGO observatory in India which will be called INDIGO. It will be the fifth in the world, after the ones being built in Japan and Italy. INDIGO will be an international collaboration between the US LIGO Labs and three leading Indian institutions – Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), and Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT).

2. LHC – The God Particle

There is an intrinsic Indian connection to the discovery of Higgs Boson at CERN – Satyendra Nath Bose, the Indian scientist after whom the sub-atomic particle is named. Over the years, CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, has seen Indian scientists make quite a mark with their work.

Indian scientists have helped build the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest single machine and the most powerful particle collider in the world. They are also collaborating on two significant CERN experiments, CMS and ALICE. CMS is one of the two experiments that discovered the Higgs Boson (also called God Particle) and ALICE studies matter under extreme conditions of density and temperature that may have existed at the birth of the universe.

India is also poised to become an associate member of CERN by the end of 2016, which would entitle it to attend even the restricted sessions of the organization.

3. Thirty Metre Telescope – World’s Most Advanced Telescope

The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be the world’s most advanced and capable ground-based telescope. At the heart of the telescope will be a mirror made up of 492 individual segments. Precisely aligned, these segments will work together as a single reflective surface with a diameter of 30 metres.

The TMT project is an international partnership between CalTech, Universities of California, Canada, Japan, China and India. The telescope was initially supposed to come up in Hawaii but had to be stopped due to local protests. Hanle in Ladakh was then proposed as one of the alternative sites, the others being in Chile.

The TMT- India project will propel India into a special league of deep space research. The main Indian institutes working on this unique project are Aryabhatta Research Institute for Observational Sciences (ARIES), the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), and the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).

4. ITER – Fusion Energy

ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is an experimental nuclear fusion reactor that is being built at Cadarache in the south of France. It’s the core of a nuclear fusion research megaproject that will also be the world’s largest plasma physics experiment.

The ITER project aims to make the long-awaited transition from experimental plasma physics to full-scale electricity-producing fusion power stations. The ITER station is expected to produce at least ten times more energy than the energy that will be required to operate it.

The project is funded and run by seven member entities—the European Union, India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, and the United States who will mostly contribute in the form of components. In India, the Ahmedabad-based Institute for Plasma Research is contributing towards the building of the tokamak reactor’s gigantic cryostat.

5. FAIR – Antiproton and Ion Research

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is an international accelerator facility that will be used to study the building blocks of the universe. Situated in Darmstadt in Germany, FAIR will use intense beams of antiprotons and ions for research in the fields of nuclear, particle, plasma and anti-matter physics.

Besides exploring the fundamental aspects of physics, the project will look into the evolution of the universe. The project will also explore and study applications of its research in biology and bio-medical sciences.

In India, the project is being co-ordinated by the Indo-FAIR Coordination Centre (IFCC) at Bose Institute, Kolkata and being jointly implemented by the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy. Several Indian industries are also involved in building advanced equipment for the FAIR accelerator.

6. SKA – World’s Largest Radio Telescope

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project is an international effort to build the world’s largest radio telescope that is currently scheduled for completion in 2024. With an unprecedented large collecting area of over a square kilometre, the SKA will be 50 times more sensitive and 10,000 times faster than any imaging radio telescope array previously built.

While India has been involved with the project since its earliest days, the Indian Government formally joined the SKA project as a member in 2015. At present, Indian scientists are leading the design team for the Telescope Manager, the brain and nervous system that will control the entire SKA observatory.

The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-TIFR) in Pune is the nodal institute for overseeing SKA related activities within India. Recently, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) located near Pune has been granted SKA Pathfinder status. Pathfinders are telescopes around the globe that give valuable feedback to the designing teams of SKA.

Actually the donation by students and poor people was true, my parents cannot lie, they would tell you that. The article l showed you also confirmed this, such that hundreds of southafrican citizens were granted free education here.
This is not to say that you owe us anything, or that you couldn't have done same, nor that we contributed alone BUT to set the records straight, and let you know that the west wasn't really interested in combating this like all of Africa.

Please show me where I said SA is richer than Nigeria? The point I was making here is that the SA resources are enjoyed by a huge number of our population by being provided the basic things that any government should be providing. I showed you what benefits the average SA citizen enjoys and you call that outdated rubbish ? . Whether you like it or not , you are behind when it comes to this and other things.

Har Indian Ka Moonshot - private technos Team Indus on road to send rover to moon for Google Xprize Lunar competition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkdDjaZS8sQ

Bengaluru based Team Indus, one of the five finalists selected in the Google Xprize Lunar competition, is in the final stages of preparation for the launch of its spacecraft that will carry two rovers and a bunch of scientific experiments to the surface of the moon. The spacecraft will be launched aboard ISRO's PSLV rocket on 28 December. If all goes according to plan, the rover will land on the moon on 26 January.

The startup is already looking beyond the lunar launch, focusing on building small-sized satellites in the future. Having built the moon spacecraft, it is confident of building launch platforms in the future as well.

"We see this competition as a test for ourselves," co-founder Rahul Narayan told HuffPost India. "Once we go through this experience we will be able to reach out to other customers and organizations as well. We can share our knowledge in specific areas of spacecraft building too."

The fledgeling Team Indus will tie up with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) with the aim of hoisting India’s flag through an unmanned spacecraft on the lunar surface on January 26, 2018, the 69th Republic Day. Team Indus is a group of youngsters who are hedging their bets on winning the $20 million Google Lunar X Prize. Team Indus comprises about 100 people mostly engineers and are led by a visionary Rahul Narayan who in his earlier avatar was a software worker and calls himself a serial entrepreneur but who in 2010, when the Google Prize Lunar X Prize was almost closing, decided to take a shot at the moon.

As off now, one Israeli team and two American teams have procured launch contracts and are close contenders for the prize. Towards what Team Indus calls ‘Har Indian Ka Moonshot’ in the next 12 months it has to build from scratch a satellite that will lift off from India’s space port Sriharikota atop riding on the PSLV, the same then has to make a soft landing on the moon and then a rover will have to slip out.

To finally win the prize the rules stipulate that the rover has to move 500 m on the lunar surface and should be able to beam back high definition images back to earth. Team Indus claims they are now among the top four contenders for the prize and they already bagged USD 1 million milestone prize from Google. This has buoyed their spirits and today among the half a dozen other serious contenders only Team Indus has a “verified contract” to launch on a highly reliable globally acclaimed rocket.
